Preschools invite families to visit
The Shoreline Community College Education Program will sponsor open houses at all eight of its member co-op preschools from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 19. The preschools are located in north Bothell, Shoreline, north Kirkland, Kenmore and Woodinville.
These cooperative preschool programs provide developmentally appropriate learning experiences for children from birth to five years of age and their parents. Check out the Shoreline Community College Web site at www.shoreline.edu for more information. Look under the “of interest” section.
AMHS holds world hunger banquet
Archbishop Thomas J. Murphy High School will conduct the World Hunger Banquet Experience from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 22 in Grace Hall at AMHS.
The cost is $10 per person or $25 for a family of four or more. The proceeds will raise funds for refugees in Darfur region of Sudan, and the event is part of the school’s Lenten observance of Operation Rice Bowl.

Astronaut to speak to foundation
Former NASA astronaut, Dr. George “Pinky” Nelson will speak to 350 community members at the 11th annual Everett Public Schools Foundation Benefit Breakfast. The breakfast fund-raiser will take place at 7 a.m. on Thursday, March 17 at the Everett Events Center.
Nelson is expected to adress the development of science curriculum on a national level as well as share about his time in space. Nelson was a NASA astronaut from 1978 to 1989 serving on the space shuttles Challenger, Columbia and Discovery.
He is currently the Science, Math and Technology Education program director and professor at Western Washington University and a member of the senior staff of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Jackson at FBLA competition
Jackson High students participated in the Future Business Leaders of America Regional Competition.
Mean Harrying placed fifth for Accounting 1, Cathy Hah place fourth for business calculations, Ashley Allen placed fourth for impromptu speaking and Matthew Bulkhead and Joshua Gills placed third for desktop publishing and Web site development.
Finalists named for merit scholarship
Bridgette Hannifin and Robbie Manhas, Jackson High School seniors, have been named National Merit Scholarship finalist. The students were selected out of 16,200 semifinalists who scored in the 99th percentile on the PSAT. Finalists will be reviewed for the merit scholarship award, which will be announced in March.
Locals earn top college grades
Jeffrey Michael Tarbox of Mill Creek was among the 594 students named to the Gonzaga University Dean’s List for fall 2004. Students must earn a 3.5 to 3.69 grade-point average to be listed.
Bothell resident Alexis K. Williamson, a graduate of Heritage Christian School, made Azusa Pacific University’s Dean’s List for the fall 2004 semester. Azusa Pacific is located in Azusa, Calif.
Schools raise tsunami funds
• Penny Creek Elementary’s fourth-graders sponsored a coin drive with the PTA and raised $5,000 for UNICEF.
• Lance Palmer’s class at Gateway Middle School held a mathathon and raised nearly $800.
• Gateway Middle School students and staff raised $1,322 in a school wide fund-raiser.
