‘Tom Sawyer’ at Madrona
Opening night of Madrona K-8’s production of “Adventures of Tom Sawyer” is 7 p.m., Thursday, March 31 at Edmonds-Woodway High School. The show will also run at 7 p.m. April 1-2, 1 p.m. April 2-3 and 6 p.m. April 3.

EAF scholarships available
The Edmonds Arts Festival Foundation offers annual tuition grants up to $1,000 each.
Any resident, age 17 or older, who has a permanent address within the boundaries of the Edmonds School District is eligible to apply. Applicant must be pursuing full time post-secondary education in the visual arts at an accredited art school, college or university in the next academic school year, and must have graduated from high school by August 2005.

Community invited to review materials
Parents and community members may review and provide feedback on new materials for literacy instruction for grades 11 and 12 in the Edmonds School District at sessions from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 10 or from 6:30-8:30 a.m. Thursday, March 17 at the Educational Service Center, 20420 68th Ave. W. in Lynnwood. Student named bee semi-finalist
Caley Howard, an eighth-grader at Brier Terrace Middle, has been selected as a finalist for the Washington Geographic Bee, sponsored by the National Geographic Society. Howard will compete against 99 other students in the state bee, April 1 at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma. The winner of the state bee will receive $100 and will travel to Washington, D.C. to compete in the national finals.
Students make the grade
Edmonds resident Ryan F. Robinson, a graduate of Edmonds-Woodway High School, made Azusa Pacific University’s Dean’s List for the fall 2004 semester. Azusa Pacific is located in Azusa, Calif.
MTHS group vies for jazz honor
Mountlake Terrace High School’s Jazz Ensemble 1 is a finalist for the prestigious Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Tenth Annual Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition and Festival. Essentially Ellington takes place in New York City May 13-15. The MTHS jazz band, under the direction of Darin Faul, submitted a recording of three Ellington songs along with 110 other bands. Jazz Ensemble 1 is one of 15 jazz bands selected including bands from Garfield, Roosevelt, and Shorewood high schools. MTHS Jazz Ensemble 1 was also a finalist in 2002 receiving honorable mention and a finalist in 2000.
Nominate your favorite teacher
Ivar’s Teacher of the Year contest is looking for nominations. Ivar’s Restaurants and Seafood Bars and Kidd Valley Restaurants are holding Ivar’s Second Annual Teacher Appreciation Contest in honor of May being Teacher Appreciation Month. Entry forms are available at any Ivar’s Seafood Bar, Acres of Clams, Ivar’s Mukilteo Landing, Ivar’s Salmon House or at any Kidd Valley Restaurant. The deadline to enter is May 20.
Preschools invite families to visit
The Shoreline Community College Education Program will sponsor open houses at all eight of its member co-op preschools from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 19. The preschools are located in north Bothell, Shoreline, north Kirkland, Kenmore and Woodinville. These cooperative preschool programs provide developmentally appropriate learning experiences for children from birth to five years of age and their parents.
