Community invited to review lessons
Parents and community members may review and provide feedback on new materials for literacy instruction for grades 11 and 12 in the Edmonds School District at sessions from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 10 or from 6:30-8:30 a.m. Thursday, March 17 at the Educational Service Center, 20420 68th Ave. W. in Lynnwood. Student named bee semi-finalist
Caley Howard, an eighth-grader at Brier Terrace Middle, has been selected as a finalist for the Washington Geographic Bee, sponsored by the National Geographic Society. Howard will compete against 99 other students in the state bee, held April 1 at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma. The winner of the state bee will receive $100 and will travel to Washington, D.C. to compete in the national finals.
Musicians lauded at jazz festival
College and high school vocal and instrumental groups and soloists from throughout the Northwest performed at the 2005 Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival at the University of Idaho in Moscow, Idaho.
Edmonds Community College I, under the direction of John Sanders, was a runner-up in the outstanding community college combo division Feb. 24.
Kathryn Moore directed Meadowdale High School to a runner-up award in the outstanding multi-mic choir Feb. 25.
On Feb. 26 Lynnwood High School, directed by Amy Gentry, was a runner-up in the outstanding AA band, site 2 category.
Meadowdale, with David Hawke as director, was recognized as a runner-up in the outstanding AAAA band, site 2 category, as was Mountlake Terrace High School I, directed by Darin Faul.
Mountlake Terrace was also given runner-up awards in the outstanding AAA band, site 1 category and outstanding AAAA combo.
Students earn top grades
Margaret Rachel O’Connor of Mountlake Terrace was named to the honors list of Indiana University for the fall semester 2004 for achieving a grade-point average of 3.5 or better. Indiana University is located in Bloomington, Ind.
Brier resident Scott Mathews was named to Tufts University’s fall 2004 dean’s list. Mathews attends the Medford/Somerville, Mass. campus of Tufts.
Claire Deeley of Edmonds was named to the dean’s list of Colby College during fall semester 2004. To do so, she received a grade-point average of at least 3.2. Colby College is located in Waterville, Maine.
Brier residents Luke A. Oines and Tia M. Resler, both graduates of Mountlake Terrace High School, made Azusa Pacific University’s Dean’s List for the fall 2004 semester. Azusa Pacific is located in Azusa, Calif.
MTHS jazz group vies for top honor
Mountlake Terrace High School’s Jazz Ensemble 1 is a finalist for the prestigious Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Tenth Annual Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition and Festival. Essentially Ellington takes place in New York City May 13 through May 15. The MTHS jazz band, under the direction of Darin Faul, submitted a recording of three Ellington songs along with 110 other bands. Jazz Ensemble 1 is one of 15 jazz bands selected including bands from Garfield, Roosevelt, and Shorewood high schools. MTHS Jazz Ensemble 1 was also a finalist in 2002 receiving honorable mention and a finalist in 2000.
