Superintendent hosts roundtable

Superintendent Nick Brossoit will host a roundtable discussion at noon Wednesday, May 4 at the Educational Services Center, 20420 68th Ave. W. The topic will be “Citizens for Schools: Lessons Learned from the Last Campaign and Next Steps.”

E-W sponsors ‘Kids Night Out’

The Edmonds-Woodway High School cheer squad is sponsoring a “Kids Night Out” event for children ages 2-12. The event will run from 3-8 p.m. on Saturday, May 14 in the Great Hall at EWHS. The cost is $20 per child, or $10 for each additional child in the family. There will be pizza, movies, games, crafts and lots of fun for the children. Grad performs on Whitman’s stage

Whitman College senior theater major Julia Beers, a graduate of Mountlake Terrace High School, portrayed Frau Steifel in Whitman’s March production “Spring Awakening.”

Students win Stevens funding

A total of 11 students from Edmonds School District high schools will be awarded Stevens Hospital scholarships May 26. The recipients are: Ashlee Malkuch and Greg Stettler (from Edmonds-Woodway), Alefa Mwenda and Jiwon Park (from Lynnwood), Joseph Lee and Si-Hyun Woo (from Meadowdale), Maninder Kaur, Jennifer Marckx and Devon Miller (from Mountlake Terrace), and Kendra Seton and Anna Vinokurova (from Scriber Lake). More than 400 medical staff members contributed to the scholarships.

EdCC volunteers log many hours

In recognition of National Volunteer Week April 17-23, Campus Connections AmeriCorps members at Edmonds Community College reported that 8,417 hours were served by 152 volunteers in 2004. Student volunteer projects, done at 89 area agencies, schools or non-profits included projects such as documenting history at the South Snohomish County Historical Society.

During 2004, 3,014 student volunteers contributed 88,197 hours at 10 of the 27 participating Washington Campus Compact member institutions. Washington Campus Compact is a higher education presidential membership organization committed to providing meaningful experiences for students to become active, engaged leaders in their communities, furthering the civic and public purposes of higher education and strengthening communities.

Resident competes for scholarship

Lynnwood resident Andrea Midori Madison will compete against three other contestants for the honor of the Greater Seattle Japanese Community Queen and the Seattle Cherry Blossom and Japanese Cultural Festival Queen at the end of May. A graduate of Edmonds-Woodway High School, Madison would represent Seattle at events in the area as well as nationally if named the winner. Madison currently attends the University of Washington and is sponsored for this competition by Mulvanny G2 Architecture.

Student wins PUD contest

Snohomish County PUD recently announced the 12 winners of the district’s annual poster contest, which had 125 entries. Soundview second-grader Samy Megalli was one of the winners and will be recognized at the commissioners’ meeting on May 3. To view the winning entries, visit www.snopud.com and click on education. The entries are also on display though June 30 at the PUD’s main office in Everett.

Students named to UW Dean’s List

The University of Washington recently announced the students named to its winter quarter Dean’s List. Students must achieve a 3.5 out of a 4.0 grade-point average to receive the honor.
