Jackson student recognized

Sarah Aagard, currently a ninth-grade student at Henry M. Jackson High School, won a Washington Search for Young Scholars Grand Award.

The Grand Award is presented to students who score higher than 92 percent of college-bound 12th-grade seniors on the ACT Assessment.

The WSYS identifies young students who will benefit from taking accelerated courses designed for youth and is sponsored by the University of Washington’s Robinson Center for Young Scholars. It recognizes fifth- through eighth-grade students who have scored high on standardized tests, such as the ACT and WASL. Seventh- and eighth-graders are required to take the ACT, which is intended for college-bound seniors.

National Merit students honored

Pooja Patel and Maria Walters from Henry M. Jackson High School received letters of commendation in recognition of their outstanding academic promise.

They will not continue in the competition for Merit Scholarship awards. To qualify, they placed in the top 5 percent of more than 1 million entrants.

Gov. scholarship applications ready

Gov. Gary Locke recently announced that applications for the fourth year of the Washington State Governor’s Scholarship for Foster Youth are now available. Locke established the program in 2001 to help children in state or federally recognized foster, group and kinship care enroll in and complete college in Washington state.

The scholarship program is funded by proceeds from the annual Governor’s Cup Golf Tournament and is managed by the Washington Education Foundation. All applicants must be in state-recognized foster, group or kinship care (or have been until emancipation) and be current high school seniors who plan to graduate during the 2004-05 school year.

Additional applicant eligibility criteria can be found on the Washington Education Foundation’s Web site – www.waedfoundation.org (click on the Governor’s Scholarship link).

Applications can be downloaded from the Washington Education Foundation’s Web site or can be requested by calling 1-877-655-4097.

Applications must be postmarked by March 1.
