Ridgecrest PTA honors volunteers

The Ridgecrest Elementary PTA is honoring four individuals this year for outstanding volunteer service to the children in our community. They are: • Susan Sallup, longtime Kindergarten teacher at Ridgecrest, is receiving the Outstanding Educator award. Sallup organizes before and after school projects for students, oversees the School Safety Patrol Program, including planning many fun incentives for the participants and is the school representative to the Shoreline Education Association.

• Toni McDonald and Mike Melchior have each been awarded the Golden Acorn award.

McDonald currently serves as secretary in the Ridgecrest school office and has been an active PTA member for all the years that her children attended the school, and still works to help the PTA and students. She also has volunteered at many school functions as photographer as well as serving as co-chair on the yearbook committee and publishing the PTA newsletter.

Melchior has been a PTA member at Ridgecrest for nine years. In that time, he has organized art projects in each of the classes his daughters have attended and has helped with various other committees and projects around the school. His biggest and final project is in process now: two large murals to cover each side of the dividing wall between the gym and cafeteria.

• Marlene Cressman is receiving honors for Lifetime Service. Cressman, though she works full time outside the home, has made time to spend in school nearly every single day of the 7 years her daughter has attended Ridgecrest, school officials said. She has served as PTA president for two years, chaired Health and Family Services and Back to School night, been Volunteer Coordinator and organized and the Holiday Gift Shops for kids. Cressmans also has been known to come in on cold days with hot cocoa for cold patrols to drink and can be seen before and after activities helping with set up and clean up.

Final S’wood coffee, questions

Principal John Green will take questions from parents at the Shorewood High School PTSA’s final principal’s coffee of the year, 6 p.m. Monday, May 10 in the School Library. The PTSA will honor volunteers whose sons and daughters will graduate in June, at a meeting that will follow the coffee at 7 p.m.

Meridian Park principal honored

Dan Peterson, Meridian Park Elementary Principal, recently received the regional Distinguished Principal Award from the East King County chapter of the Elementary School Principals’ Association of Washington (ESPAW). The plaque was presented to him at a recent EKCPAW event April 22. The honor recognizes Peterson as being a distinguished elementary school principal and is presented as a tribute to his deep and professional commitment to the children of Meridian Park, school officials said. Additionally, the award honors his efforts in the following categories: promoting positive school community relations, implementing instructional programs leading to academic excellence, and for active participation in strengthening local, state and national professional principals’ associations, officials added. Peterson also was commended for his humanitarian efforts in connecting educators in Russia and the United States and translating this connection to his students and staff.

PTA earns award for service

The Lake Forest School PTA was named the Outstanding Unit at the state PTA convention May 1 and 2. This is the third time in recent years that LFP PTA has received this award. Their certification as a School of Excellence for parent participation, the family “Hula Hop” dance and the Science Night were noted as significant activities.
