ATM student named Scholar

Timothy M. Burke of Archbishop Thomas J. Murphy High School recently was selected as a National Merit Scholar.

The award includes a $2,500 college scholarship. He plans on attending Rice University in Houston, and is the son of Tom and Barbara Burke.

Factors in naming a student a National Merit Scholar include each finalist’s academic record, including difficulty level of subjects studied and grades earned; scores from two standardized tests; contributions and leadership in school and community activities; an essay describing interests and goals; and a recommendation from a high school official.

Everett students to be honored

Twelve graduating seniors from the Everett School District who were nominated as Superintendant Scholar Candidates will be honored at an upcoming event.

This event is scheduled for Tuesday, May 18 at the Everett Golf and Country Club. The seniors were chosen based on academic acheivements and submitted essays.

Honored staff members also will be recognized. The winner will be presented with a crystal flame; the Superintendent’s Scholar Award.

Summer school registration

Summer school classes in the Everett School District are now open for registration.

Registration forms are available at schools. Tuition-based, onsite and on-line are available for elementary, middle and high school age students and community members.

Paella, Flamenco event at EvCC

A feast will be held on the Parks Student Union Plaza at Everett Community College May 25, complete with paella and Flemenco dancing.

The festivities begin at 10 a.m., with a meal at noon and ending at 1 p.m. The paella – a specialty of Spain – will be prepared by Chef Jaime Kuhn.

The Flamenco performance will take place during the meal. Carmona Flamenco, a group that specializes in modern tradition Flamenco dancing is hosting the event.
