Cooking class for ‘tweens’ offered

The Northshore YMCA’s is offering a cooking class called Tween Basics from 8 to 9:15 p.m. Saturday, Jan 3 at the YMCA, 11811 NE 195th in Bothell.

The class offers an interactive way for children ages nine to 11 to learn cooking skills in a safe environment. Topics covered include the nutrition basics, food preparation and serving suggestions. Cost for the class is $5 per person.

Japanese arts series at EvCC

Everett Community College will host a fine arts series this year including One World Taiko at 11 a.m. Jan. 13 in the Parks Student Union multipurpose room on campus. The event is free and open to the public.

Founding members Gary Tsujimoto and Nancy Ozaki will present a contemporary style of Japanese drumming that incorporates dynamic and fluid movement as well as percussion on traditional Japanese instruments such as odaiko (large drum), chudaiko (medium sized drum), shimedaiko (small, rope-tied drum), shinobue (bamboo flute) and koto (13-stringed zither like instrument) along with Japanese percussion instruments such as atarigane (brass gong), chappa (hand cymbals) and hyotan (ground shaker).

Nobel Prize winner to visit UWB

The University of Washington, Bothell (UWB) will host Nobel Prize winner Dr. Sherry Rowland at an “Our Changing Atmosphere in 2004” event Feb. 12.

Rowland won the 1995 Nobel Prize for Chemistry for his research in atmospheric chemistry, explaining the destruction of the stratospheric ozone layer. He also is a professor at the University of California at Irvine and a member of the National Academy of Sciences.

This event was organized in conjunction with the American Academy for the Advancement of Science annual meeting in Seattle, scheduled for 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13 at the Washington State Convention &Trade Center.
