The Works moves, needs volunteers
The Shoreline PTA Council’s clothing room, The Works, is moving to a new site Jan.7.
The new location will be in the north end rooms of Ridgecrest Elementary School, 16516 10th NE in Shoreline. Hours of operation will continue to be every Wednesday night following the school calendar.
The Works offers gently used clothing, personal hygiene supplies, new underwear, socks and school supplies for families in need. Volunteers are needed from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, to help set up at the new Ridgecrest site. Food donations for workers also are needed. Call for award nominations
Staff, students and community members are invited to participate in an annual event and nominate a teacher and a support staff person to be Shoreline Teacher of the Year and Support Person of the Year respectively. Nominations may be made by staff, students, parents, and other community members. To make a nomination, contact the Community Relations &District Services Office at 206-361-4412 for a nomination form and/or with questions about the form and process.
Nomination packets for Teacher of the Year and Support Person of the Year nominees are due in the Community Relations &District Services Office by Feb. 6, 2004. Those selected are recognized during Teacher Appreciation Week, May 2-8; Support Staff Appreciation Week, March 8-12; and at the Annual Retirement Tea.

Kinderfest 2004 date set
Shoreline School District’s Kinderfest 2004 is scheduled to take place from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Jan. 24, in the Shoreline Room at the Shoreline Center, 18560 First Ave. NE. The event provides an opportunity for parents who will be enrolling their children in kindergarten for the 2004-2005 school year to gather information about the various kindergarten programs and services available in the district.
Topics to be covered include kindergarten curriculum, registration procedures, transportation, health and safety issues, before/after school care, immunization requirements, student services that are available and the all-day or half-day programs. Parents also will have an opportunity to visit a kindergarten classroom.
Kindergarten registration for the 2004-2005 school year begins on Tuesday, Jan. 27. Parents can register their child at the school in their attendance area from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 27 and on Jan. 28 the registration hours will be between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. any school day. Kindergarten registration packets will be available in all elementary buildings beginning Jan. 20.

Highly capable testing dates set
Screening for the Shoreline School District’s Highly Capable Program for elementary grades will begin in January, 2004. All district and interested private school first grade students will be tested in January. Parents of current district first graders will receive information in the mail about the testing and will have the option of declining the testing of their child by signing and returning a postcard to the Highly Capable Program office. The top 10% of the first graders tested in January will go on for further testing. Students in grades 2-5 not currently being served by the program and private school students will be tested in January and February. Parents interested in having their child assessed for program eligibility should contact Carolyn Froerer in the Highly Capable Program office at 206-368-4771.
Important dates:
• The deadline for private school first graders to sign up for testing is Jan. 5
• The deadline for second through fifth grade students to sign up for testing is Jan. 16
• Preliminary first grade testing in regular classrooms will be Jan. 5-16
• Private School first grade testing at Shoreline Center will be Jan. 14 &15
• First grade (top 10 percent) testing will be Jan. 31 and Feb. 7: students must attend both dates
• Second and fourth grade testing will be Jan. 31 &Feb. 7: students must attend both dates
• third and fifth grade testing will be Jan. 31 (Private school students also may need to attend on Feb. 7 )
Brookside PTA earns $1,800 grant
The Brookside PTA recently was awarded a $1,800 grant from The Fred Meyer Foundation
