Shorecrest seniors named Wa. Scholars
Shorecrest seniors Dustin Cho and Brian Earp recently were named as 2004 Washington Scholars by The Washington Higher Education Coordinating Board. Three students from each legislative district are chosen for this award annually and are recognized for academic excellence, leadership skills and involvement in their community. Each student will receive an award certificate and letter of congratulations from Gov. Gary Locke and will attend a recognition luncheon May 19 in Olympia. They also are offered a scholarship for four years of undergraduate coursework at public or independent colleges.
Parkwood dinner, auction date set
Parkwood Elementary School will host a spaghetti dinner and silent auction from 5-8:30 p.m. Saturday, May 1 at the school, 1815 N. 155th St, Shoreline. The dinner is $6 per person; children under five are free. There is no charge to attend the silent auction. The main course will be catered by Spiro’s Pizza and Pasta and dessert will be provided by LePanier Bakery. All proceeds from the dinner and auction will benefit next year’s sixth-grade students who will be attending a program called IslandWood, which is a unique 255-acre outdoor learning center on Bainbridge Island that provides kids with hands-on learning experiences combining science, technology and the arts. For more information about the dinner and auction, call Loni Uchytil at 206-440-3007.
Donate cell phones, printer cartridges
In an effort to preserve the environment, students and parents of Room Nine Journey School recently began recycling empty printer cartridges and used cell phones that would normally be taken to landfills. The cartridges and cell phones collected by Room Nine Journey School are sent to FundingFactory, where they are inspected and then sold to recycling companies to be remanufactured. The cartridges are later sold to secondary markets, including retailers and office-supply stores. Cell phones are either donated to nonprofit markets such as women’s shelters, sold to refurbishers who sell them back into the domestic market, or sold to foreign markets. As a reward for their efforts, participants in the FundingFactory Recycling Program can earn technology, classroom or recreational equipment. Companies interested in participating can do so free of charge in the FundingFactory Business Support Program. FundingFactory will send each supporting business free, postage-paid shipping boxes for the return of collected cartridges and cell phones. Community and business supporters can also drop off cartridges and cell phones at the school, which is located at the Aldercrest Annex, 2545 NE 200th Street in Shoreline. For more information, call Ro Berkley at 206-542-4440 or e-mail JourneyProgram@Yahoo.com. For more information on Funding Factory, visit www.FundingFactory.com, or call, toll-free, 1.888.883.8237.
