Safe Kids featured at Woodside event
Woodside Elementary School staff and families will host a program titled Safe Kids, Inc. at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 23 at the school.
The program features nationally recognized safety experts sharing tips and information about how parents can teach their children about personal safety.
Topics will include how to avoid unsafe situations, detect danger signs, get help, get out of uncomfortable situations and how to stay safe.
The program is only for adults, and free childcare will be provided by staff at the YMCA during the event.

EvCC to offer new lecture series
Everett Community College will host Turf! at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 4 at the PUD Auditorium located at 2320 California Street in Everett.
Turf! offers high-energy music and synchronized break dance routines and other performances, officials said.
Coming up:
•At 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 20, the college will host “Recycled Percussion” at the PUD Auditorium. This event also is free and open to the community. Recycled tools, barrels, basement garbage, building site leftovers, recycled thoughts, recycled inspirations, recycled groves and rhythms of the planet earth make up this unique performance, officials said.
• May 3-6 the college will host a Mystical Arts of Tibet Mandala Sand Painting event in the Northlight Gallery, Parks Student Union on campus.
• At 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 5, Sacred Music Sacred Dance will perform at the Everett Civic Auditorium, located 2418 Colby Avenue, Everett.
All events are free and open to the community.

Cascadia film festival winners
The first annual Cascadia Community College Festival of Short Films on Feb. 7 brought in many well-known Hollywood names to campus, officials said, and resulted in numerous student awards.
Stewart Stern provided a 90 minute autobiographical account of his life and career in the industry, and was interviewed by screen writer Brian McDonald.
At the event, Cascadia Community College awarded Stern with its first Cinematic Arts Award, which is given to individuals who have made major contributions in the cinematic arts, screen writing, directing, music or acting, officials said.
Workshops at the event were conducted by Brian McDonald, screenwriter, director and screenplay consultant; Virgina Bogert, producer/director of Laughing Dog Productions; Robert Goodwin, producer/director/writer, three-time Golden Globe winner and Producer of “X-Files” and “The Fugitive;” and Fidelma McGinn industry financial consultant.
Audience members included well-known Hollywood names including Bill Murray, screenwriter, David Poval, actor and screenwriter; Sheila Larkin, actress; Dickey Nessigner, screenwriter and playwright.
In addition to the workshops, short films produced by regional high school, community college and university students were featured.
The winners were awarded in several categories, including: Best Film, first prize – “Flashback,” Shigeru Makino, Art Institute of Seattle. Second Prize – “Symptom of Innocence,” Caleb Van Winkle, Art Institute of Seattle. Best Animation, first prize – “Welcome to the Machine,” Drew Christie, Bellevue Community College. Second prize – “Zoo Living,” Rachel Teigrob, Art Institute of Seattle. Best High School, First prize – “Last Dance,” Allison Reed, Kentridge High School. Second Prize – “Bad Karma,” Sarah Ricci, Ballard High School. Audience Choice: “Chasing Wanda,” Steve Moses, Cascadia Community College.
