Askarian was one of 43 students that participated, 12 of whom were girls.

Sign up for or donate to Back to School event

The Back to School Consortium has planned its annual Back To School Event for Aug. 25 at Ridgecrest Elementary.

The event provides school supplies, haircuts, and clothing assistance for families in the Shoreline School District who are living with a low income and/or experiencing circumstances that make it hard to prepare a child for return to school.

Register for the event by calling the Shoreline Family Support Center at (206) 362-7282 extension 223.

The project needs donations of school supplies for children, including backpacks, glue sticks, colored pencils, blunt scissors, wide tip markers, bottled glue, 24-pack crayons, rulers, pocket folders, composition notebooks, three-ring binders, toothpaste, notebook dividers, permanent markers, red, blue and black pens, shampoo and conditioner, calculators, deodorant, notebook paper, spiral notebooks, new socks and underwear of all sizes, new or gently used books for all ages and more. Money donations also are needed.

All donations are tax deductible and can be dropped off at Center for Human Services, 17018 15th Ave. NE, Shoreline. Make checks out to the Center for Human Services and put “Back to School” in the memo line of the check.

Call (206) 362-7282, extension 271, for information.

Local students on Seattle stage this summer

Four students from Shoreline are participating in the Summer Season program at Seattle Children’s Theatre Drama School in Seattle this summer.

Eighth grader Lana Miller will act in “Fight School” at 8:15 p.m. Aug. 10 and 11 at the theater at 201 Thomas St. at Seattle Center in Seattle. “Fight School” is a new play about the travails of a struggling stage combat academy and includes sword fighting, adventure and comedy.

Eleventh grader Lena Cronin and ninth grader Nicole Luche will act in “RNJ” at 8:15 p.m. Aug. 23, 24 and 25. Developed through Drama School Original Works classes, the comedy updates Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. The tragic story of young love is placed in the modern teen world of instant messaging and virtual miscommunication.

Seventh-grader James Lynch acted in “Ramona Quimby,” which ran in July.

In April, 275 actors from as far as Hong Kong auditioned for the program. The theater accepted 137 to train with top local theater educators.

Tickets are $6 for single tickets, $10 for a double feature of two shows in one night. To purchase tickets, call (206) 441-3322 or (206) 443-6938 for the hearing impaired, or visit www.sct.org.
