SCC’s retraining programs are open
Orientations for Shoreline Community College’s Worker Retraining Program are now open. The program is geared towards helping people who are currently unemployed and need new skills or who need additional training to find work.
For more information about the worker retraining programs, enrollment and orientations, call 206-546-5882. Orientations are held weekly up to three weeks before the end of each quarter. Registration appointments are set up following orientation.
Developmental skill screening
The Shoreline Early Childhood Education Center is offering developmental skill screenings for school-age kids in the Shoreline School District. Screenings for speech and language, vision and hearing, motor skills, cognitive abilities, social-emotional and adaptive skills can now be scheduled upon request from their school’s speech and language pathologist, occupational and physical therapists or psychologist.

Back-to-school fair for parents, kids
Students and parents from all school districts are invited to a back-to-school community resource fair from 1:30 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 19 at Cedar Valley Community School, 19200 56th Ave. W, Lynnwood. The event is hosted by Edmonds School District staff.
The event will include 50 free haircuts for students provided by 33rd Sunset Snip, Soma Salon, and A Styling Studio on 173rd. Haircuts will be given on a first-come, first-served basis. The Snohomish Health District also will provide an on-site immunization clinic; parents need to bring their child’s shot record to participate. Enrollment for the district’s Headstart program, school registration information, information about free school clothing, vision and hearing screening, Department of Social and Health Services, school lunch programs, and various local social services also will be available at the fair.

Meeting dates set on SCC building
Students, staff and community members are invited to attend one of several meetings scheduled to discuss Shoreline Community College’s future plans to build a new Allied Health and Science Building. Architects from NBBJ, the firm chosen to work on the design of the building, and campus officials will be at the meeting to answer questions. The forum is designed to gain input from the college community, and suggestions will be considered during the planning process.
Scheduled meeting dates:
• 1:30-3:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 19 in the PUB Canteen room. This meeting is a continuation of the previous meeting on Aug. 5. Ideas from the previous meeting also will be confirmed.
• 1:30-3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 14 in the PUB Canteen room. This meeting will focus on the evaluation of the physical concepts of the building and discuss the “preferred alternative” plan.
The Works offers free school clothes
The Works, operated by the Shoreline School District’s PTA Council, is offering “gently used” clothing at no cost to Shoreline students ages preschool through high school. New underwear, socks and personal hygiene products also are available.
Reduced-cost eyeglasses also may be available through school nurses or family advocates, officials added.
The Works is open from 6:30-8:30 p.m. every Wednesday, following the Shoreline school schedule, and is located at 2800 NE. 200th St at Aldercrest School.
SCC salon offers summer specials
The Shoreline Community College Salon is offering summer specials 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays and from noon to 8 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays. Haircuts are half price every Monday, scalp treatments and blow dry styling are free with a facial, and permanent waves including a haircut and styling are $20 on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Hair color and cap frosts are 20 percent off all summer. These prices are good through Sept. 11. Call 206-546-4631 for more info.
S’crest to host new student orientation
Shorecrest High School will host a new student kick-off event at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 27 in the Shorecrest gym.
The event is geared towards introducing new students and their parents to the school. Those who attend can ask questions about academic programs, tour the campus and meet teachers, counselors, coaches, advisors and administrators. A performance by various Shorecrest groups will also take place during the event.
