Brookside offering college scholarship

The Brookside Elementary School PTA is currently offering two college scholarships, each for $250, to a graduating senior. This scholarship may be used at a college, university, technical or vocational school. Applicants must be 2003 graduates with the following credentials: must have attended Brookside Elementary for at least three complete years, must be a 2003 graduate of Shorecrest or Shorewood High School, must have cumulative GPA of 2.5 or above verified by school counselor, and plan to attend a college, university or vocational/technical school.

Applications can be picked up at the Career Centers of either Shorecrest or Shorewood High Schools, at Brookside, or on-line at http://schools.shorelineschools.org/brookside/.

Applications should be sent or dropped off at Brookside Elementary School, 17747 37th NE, Lake Forest Park, WA 98155, and addressed to the Student Alumni Scholarship Committee.

Winners will be selected in a random drawing at the Brookside Hoe Down and PTA General Membership Meeting on Friday, May 30. Winners will be notified by June 5. For more information, contact Cathie Koll, Scholarship Chairperson, at kollccrs@nwlink.com or 206-528-2099.

Evergreen Teacher of the Year

Kathleen Font, teacher at Shoreline’s The Evergreen School, received a Teacher of the Year award on May 6 from the Sam’s Club Foundation. Font will receive $1,000 to be used for professional development, a “Teacher of the Year” vest and a certificate of recognition.

Sims honors

Earth Heroes

Brookside Elementary School teachers Mary Clevenger-Bright and Carolyn Barden were among 21 teachers, students, school staff and volunteers who were recently recognized by King County Executive Ron Sims for doing exceptional work to protect the environment. The awards were given during a ceremony at Mercer View Community Center on Mercer Island. Recipients were nominated for their on-going commitment to preserving the natural environment through educational efforts.

District newsletter online

The Shoreline School District’s community newsletter, Report to Our Communities, is available in electronic format on the web. You can access the Spring 2003 edition on the District’s web site at www.shorelineschools.org by clicking on the “News &Information” tab at the top of the home page, then on the “Publications” link located under the blue wave. PTA scholarship awarded

The Shoreline PTA Council has awarded its annual college scholarships to Shorecrest High School student Nina Nguyen and Shorewood’s Sara Marshall. Both students will receive a $500 award for study at universities they plan to attend in fall 2003.

The scholarships were awarded through a drawing to a single applicant from each school with a 2.5 minimum GPA.

The Shoreline PTA Council funds its annual student scholarships with contributed funds.
