Board approves Esperance razing

The Edmonds School Board at their regular board meeting Tuesday, Jan. 14, approved demolition of Esperance Elementary and outdoor activity shelter at the old Woodway Elementary.

The move allows the district to enter a contract and work with an engineering services consulting team to determine probable cost of the demolition, district property manager Bret Carlstad said.

According to the recommendation presented to the school board, the budget for this phase of the project is $146,000, and “additional budget authorization will be sought as soon as probable costs are determined.”

The approval also allows the team to include geotechnical services and a hazardous and difficult materials assessment to be made in order to look at a fuel tank that sits underneath the Esperance school which holds diesel oil bunker fuel. This tank allowed the school to get a low gas rate when demand was particularly high, such as in the winter.

Carlstad said there is little chance that the tank has or will leak into the ground surrounding the building.

“Bunker oil fuel tends to be not as think as tar but almost, so if there were a leak it would not move very far,” Carlstad said. “The checks we’ve done don’t tell us there’s leakage, but the knowledge we have about things that are surrounded by dirt is that there’s always a likelihood of leaking.”

Carlstad added that the district plans to retain the site and determine whether they will turn it into a grassy area or a parking lot.
