Madrona hoedown

set for Feb. 14

The Madrona K-8 All-School hoedown will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 14 in the school gym, 9300 236th SW, Edmonds. Hoedown dances have been learned as part of the recent physical education curriculum. Parents and community members are invited to see students and staff dancing up a storm! Schools to offer driver’s education

Spring Traffic Safety Education classes will be offered at all Edmonds School District High Schools beginning the week of March 31 and finishing up by June 12. Classes are held after school and an evening class will be held provided enough students sign up for the evening class.

The fee for the course is $365.00 and enrollment will be accepted through March 24.

Edmonds School District students who plan to enroll in the class should contact their school counselor’s offices to pick up their registration packets. Other students interested in the program may call the Edmonds School District Traffic Safety Education Office at 670-7130 to receive their registration packets.

EdCC looking for writers and artists

“Between the Lines,” Edmonds Community College’s literary and art publication, is looking for works of fiction, creative non-fiction, poetry, and art to include in its upcoming edition. The deadline to submit work is Feb. 15. For requirements e-mail btl@edcc.edu or call 425-640-1328.

Between the Lines is produced by students and published annually in May. It has earned local and national awards for the quality of its design and content. Garden club offers college scholarship

The Floretum Garden Club of Edmonds each year offers a scholarship to a high school graduate who plans to pursue a career in horticulture, floral design, landscape design, botany, forestry or a related field. The scholarship recipient may attend any college, community college or university in Washington state during the year following the award of the scholarship. The deadline for the application is April 11.

ACT testing deadline coming

The next nationwide test date for high school students who want to take the ACT Assessment is April 12. The registration postmark deadline is March 7. Late registration postmark deadline is March 21.

‘Sin, Skin and Seed’ at EdCC

Instructor Thomas Murphy will present “Sin, Skin, and Seed: Mistakes of Men in the Book of Mormon” from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Feb. 25 in the Triton Union Building 202 at the college, 20000 68th Ave. W., Lynnwood.

The lecture questions the basis for ideas about skin color and sinfulness, patriarchy and the heritage of Native Americans.

Murphy is chair of the Anthropology Department at Edmonds Community College, and his publications have appeared in Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion, Ethnohistory, Journal of Mormon History, Dialogue, and elsewhere.

Excellent service awarded at EdCC

The following Edmonds Community College staff members have been recognized by their peers and the EdCC Foundation for their exceptional service in their positions at the college: Edward Heisel, cashier supervisor; Laverne Bean, cashier; Christina Hanson and Caroline Mann, instructional technicians in the science laboratories; and Marla Rice, program assistant for College Relations and Advancement.

A reception for the classified award winners was held in February.

EdCC elects new Foundation Chair

The Edmonds Community College Foundation Board of Directors has elected Mike Gianunzio, general counsel of the Snohomish County Public Utility District, as its new Chair for a two-year term. Vaughn Sherman is the immediate past chair of the Foundation Board.

Gianunzio will serve on the Foundation’s executive committee with Dick Van Hollebeke, Vice Chair; Diana Clay, Treasurer; and Ruth Arista, Secretary.

The Edmonds Community College Foundation works with the college to provide quality educational opportunities to the community through scholarships, support and advocacy.
