EdCC teacher wins excellence award

Ed van der Bogert, construction management instructor at Edmonds Community College, received a statewide excellence in teaching award in March from the Washington Association of Occupational Educators.

Van der Bogert was recognized for the connections he has developed between the building industry and the college’s training program, officials said.

The award is given annually to recognize outstanding service by professional and technical educators at the state’s community and technical colleges.

Journalists at MTHS honored

Four student staff members from Mountlake Terrace High School newspaper, The Hawkeye, earned awards at the Washington Journalism Education Association State Convention on March 22 at Emerald Ridge High School in Puyallup.

Honorable Mentions were collected by senior Azzréal Pugh (editorial writing), junior Miko Calivo (review writing) and junior Joe Hinson (news writing). Senior photographer Dan Doucette was the only student in the competition to earn the highest honor, a “superior” rating, for carry-in photography.

Powerful Partners honored by Senate

Powerful Partners was honored March 25 with a proclamation from state Sen. Paull Shin, D-Mukilteo, on the floor of the state Senate. The proclamation recognized Powerful Partners, the schools, staff, volunteers and donors for the contribution they make “to the Edmonds School District, the lives of children and the community at large” serves more than 2,400 students at Beverly, Edmonds, Meadowdale, Lynndale and Seaview Elementary along with the Maplewood Parent Co-Op.

The district was also recently awarded a grant from the Discuren Foundation that will help Powerful Partners to continue their tutoring, after school programs, mentoring, and enrichment opportunities for students in the 2003-2004 school year.

Drama scholarship made available

The Edmonds Driftwood Players are offering award scholarships of $1,000 or more to several 2003 high school graduates who live in or attend school in the south Snohomish or northwest King County school district areas.

Interested students must submit an application demonstrating talent in performance or technical theater arts and intend to continue studying theater arts in college. Students will be selected based on their applications and a personal interview.

To request an application, call 425-774-9600. The deadline for submission is April 19.

Get hired at the EdCC career fair

Edmonds Community College and Central Washington University will host a Career Fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 8 in Triton Union Building 202 at the college, 20000 68th Ave. W., Lynnwood.

More than 40 employers offering jobs in a variety of fields will be at the fair.

In addition, to help those looking for work improve their chances of getting hired, Edmonds Community College is offering free resume critiques and job search workshops prior to the fair.

Resume critique sessions will be 10 a.m.-1 p.m., April 24, May 1 or May 5 in the Snohomish Hall Lobby. Get Hired: Career Fair Preparation Day workshops will be 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., April 29 in Triton Union Building, 202.

Awards at Family Dinner Night

On Tuesday, March 25, the Lake Forest Park School PTA hosted its annual Family Dinner Night with about 300 people in attendance, and presented the Golden Acorn Awards for dedication and service to children and youth and the Outstanding Educator Award for excellence in teaching. Parent volunteers Claire Conway, David Angell and Paula Richards received the Golden Acorn Awards, and kindergarten teacher Laurie Pearson was given the Outstanding Educator Award. The recipients received a certificate, pin and a contribution will be made in their name to the Washington State PTA Scholarship Foundation.

Shorewood store wins award

Marketing and DECA students who run the Shorewood student store were recently awarded a gold-level certification for their “outstanding achievement in a school-based enterprise (SBE)” by The School-based Enterprise Certification Program. The students were one of 12 SBE’s in the U.S. to receive the award. Project chairman Erica Burton will attend the International Career Development Conference in Orlando, Florida, where she will receive the award for the group.

PTA scholarship forms available

Scholarship applications are available for Shorecrest and Shorewood high school seniors from the Shoreline PTA Council.

The $500 awards will be presented to one soon-to-be graduate at Shorecrest and one at Shorewood. Winners will be selected in a drawing at the Shoreline PTA Council’s April 28 meeting.

To be eligible for the scholarship, candidates must have a 2.5 grade point average and plan to attend a university, college or technical school in fall 2003.

Application forms can be obtained in each school’s career center. Deadline for submission is April 25.

JHS grad party donations needed

In an effort to raise money to support the Jackson High School Class of 2006 All-Night Graduation Party, the JHS Parent Class of 2006 Committee is asking for parent and community donations, as well as support for the fundraisers that will occur in the next year.

The graduation party is an adult-supervised function for Jackson High School Seniors only, and ensures a safe, substance-free celebration after graduation.

Eldercare workshop at UWB

The University of Washington, Bothell is hosting a day-long eldercare workshop from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday, May 17 on campus.

This “hands-on” workshop, facilitated by consumer advocate Liz Taylor, is geared towards people who have or anticipate having the responsibility for family eldercare needs. Topics covered include how to determine needs, what services exist, costs and how to pay for them, legal protection for care givers and finding the right services. The workshop will also address family stresses, established behavior patterns, and the possible burdens on care givers.

The workshop is open to the community. The cost is $65 per person.

Senior dinner, jazz night at Jackson

Jackson High School will host its eighth annual Senior Citizens’ dinner from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Sunday, April 27 at Jackson High School in the Commons. Dorian Studios will be at the school from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. to take complimentary pictures. The guests will be served dinner and entertained by the Jackson jazz band and jazz choir. The event is free.

Learn to make a flashlight

Snohomish County PUD is offering an Electricity Camp for kids in fourth, fifth and sixth grade from 9 a.m. to noon April 9-11. A second camp is scheduled for 9 a.m. to noon April 14-16.

Students who attend the camp will learn how to use everyday supplies to construct a variety of mechanical devices that will help them understand circuits and motors.

Activities include learning how to make a flashlight, building an electric winch and constructing a car using switches and circuits.

The cost of the camp is $20 for all three days, and will be held at Snohomish County PUD, 2320 California St. in Everett.

HS PTSA looking for support

Each year, Jackson High School PTSA awards scholarships to graduating seniors who will attend a four-year university, community college, vocational or technical school.

To continue this tradition, the PTSA is seeking donations from the Jackson community of families and the local businesses that serve them.

Contributions should be sent by April 1 to finalize the number of scholarships to be awarded.
