I-728 public hearing set for April 23

The Shoreline School District will conduct a public hearing on distribution of Initiative 728 funds during its regular board meeting which starts at 7:30 p.m. on April 23 in the Shoreline Room at the Shoreline Center. The purpose of the public hearing is to give the community an opportunity to give input on the distribution of I-728 funds in the Shoreline School District.

I-728 funds distribution is decided by the school board and can include class-size reduction, extended learning opportunities, professional development for educators, early childhood programs and improvements for school buildings. The final approval will occur as part of the 2007-08 budget adoption in August 2007.

Food banks to benefit from Hopelink drive

Locals can donate funds or food to Hopelink’s annual “End Summer Hunger” fund and food drive through July 1. Proceeds go toward stocking Hopelink’s six food banks in north and east King County, including Shoreline, for the high-demand summer months when subsidized meal programs at schools are not available. Money also will be used for homelessness prevention.

Last year the program raised more than $115,000 in money and food donations.

Nearly 13 percent of the school children in school districts in Hopelink’s service areas receive free or reduced-cost breakfasts and lunches during the school year. When the subsidized meal programs are no available, parents experience an even greater strain on their already stressed household budgets, and rely even more heavily on food banks to fill the gap, Hopelink officials explained. Individuals, businesses, schools and organizations can donate.

Shoreline students win music scholarships

On March 11, Choir of the Sound hosted the Shorecrest High School Orcadian Choir and the Shorewood High School Aeolian Choir for the First Annual Invitational Concert at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Lynnwood.

The concert culminated with the presentation of $1,000 Rose Award scholarships to one student from each school.

Nora Reikosky of Shorecrest and Lauren Oglesby of Shorewood won the scholarships. Over $600 was raised on that evening to be applied towards next year’s scholarship fund.

Donations can be sent to Choir of the Sound, PO Box 33149, Seattle, WA 98133.
