SCHOOL BRIEFS: Party kicks off bicycle program

The Edmonds Bicycle Advocacy Group (EBAG) invites the public to a holiday party Dec. 6 to celebrate the start of the the Basics of Bicycling Program in the Edmonds School District. The program, started by the Cascade Bicycle Club and facilitated by EBAG, educates students in the third through sixth grades on the safe (and fun) way to ride a bike.

The Hazel Miller Foundation provided funding.

The party will be held from 7:30-9 p.m. in room 206 of the Frances Anderson Center, 700 Main St., Edmonds. Light refreshments will be served.

Snow day prompts change

A snow day last week means the last day of school will be pushed back in the Edmonds School District. The last day of school, with an early release, is now set for June 22, a Wednesday.

World Cup is topic of UWB talk

The University of Washington Bothell’s fall Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences (IAS) Research Colloquium series concludes at 4 p.m. Dec. 7 with “My World Cup,” presented by Ron Krabill, Georgia Roberts and Angelica Macklin.

The IAS Research Colloquium, part of a 1-credit course for graduate students, is a showcase of research-in-progress by IAS faculty members.

All talks will be held on the UW Bothell campus, 18115 Campus Way NE, in UW1, room 280 (the Rose Room), are free and open to the public.

Vizzutti plays with MTHS bands

The Mountlake Terrace High School Band Winter Concert will be held at 7 p.m. Dec. 9 in the high school theater, 21801 44th Ave. W with special guest, trumpet soloist Allen Vizzutti.

A classical and jazz artist, composer and music educator, Vizzutti has performed with orchestras and bands around the world, on television and on many movie and game soundtracks, including “Star Trek” and “Halo.”

Sponsors of Vizzutti’s guest appearance include Yamaha and Kennelly Keys.

Make a dash for Shorecrest

Shorecrest High School’s 15th annual Candy Cane Dash 5k run/walk will be held at 9 a.m. Dec. 4, Saturday. All proceeds from the family-friendly event benefit the Shorecrest cross country team as well as the Senior Project Fund.

This year’s Dash is organized by senior Melissa Ruhlman, the youngest of eight children who is continuing a family tradition of organizing the race, which her brother, Scott Ruhlman, started 15 years ago for his own senior project. Scott Ruhlman is now an orthopedic surgeon and his practice is this year’s main sponsor.
