The process has begun to fill the Edmonds School Board director District 4 position left empty by Dr. Bruce Williams, who stepped down last week halfway through his term.

Williams stepped down because he had to, legally, he said. He moved outside the boundaries of the District 4 position and law requires him to leave his board position as a result. District 4 covers the Edmonds-Woodway High School area, the upper southwest part of the Edmonds School District.

Williams left his former home for personal reasons, he said.

“I looked for a home I could afford in my director position No. 4 (area) but there was nothing I could (afford),” Williams said. “It’s in ‘the bowl’ out to Edmonds-Woodway, so it tends to be pretty affluent.”

Williams moved 10 blocks away from his old house, and is still in Edmonds, but is outside the boundary for his position.

Williams is a doctor who practices general and internal medicine in an office across the street from Stevens Hospital. He served on the board for 10 years.

His term ends in fall 2009, so the district is looking for a replacement for the next two years. The Edmonds School Board will appoint someone within 90 days.

The district will accept applications until Oct. 17.

The board will interview candidates at a study session Oct. 30, and the public can come and listen. They will then nominate and vote on applicants at the Nov. 13 meeting.

All applicants must be U.S. citizens, Washington state residents and live in the District 4 area. The definition of boundaries is on the district’s Web site, www.edmonds.wednet.edu.

A general election will be in November for two other board seats, now held by Patrick Shields and Gary Noble.

Interested residents can send a letter of interest by 5 p.m. Oct. 17 to the Edmonds School District, attention: JoAnn Kerns, 20420 68th Ave. W., Lynnwood WA 98036 or call 425-431-7003 for information.
