Read Across America was celebrated during the week of Feb. 28 through March 4 in celebration of Dr. Seuss’ 101st birthday.
Since 1998, the National Education Association has sponsored and promoted this event across the nation with the focus being to motivate children to read.
In addition to individual buildings in the Edmonds School District that planned reading events and activities, the Edmonds Education Association also gets into the spirit of promoting reading throughout the district through their annual door poster contest. This contest encourages students in grades K-8 to come up with a creative reading theme and accompany it with original artwork on their classroom door.
This year’s winners were chosen from a total of 55 door entries received. The panel of judges for this year’s contest was composed of area businessmen John Knutson and Gary Hopper, Superintendent Nick Brossoit, Cascade High School student Brennan Wilson and Edmonds Education Association administrator Cheryl Wilson.
Winning classrooms received a visit from the “Cat in the Hat” (aka Cheryl Wilson from the education association) and were treated to cupcakes, an award certificate and a goody basket for their teacher – all courtesy of the education association.
Other “Cat” visits that same day were made possible through the volunteer efforts of two Mountlake Terrace High School students – Jessica Schrock and Dustin Cook. Each of these students visited several schools and read to classrooms.
