Scriber students publish book

A group of students from Scriber Lake High School in Edmonds have published a collection of true stories designed to shine the spotlight on teen issues.

“We Are Absolutely Not Okay: Fourteen Stories by Teenagers Who Are Picking Up the Pieces” offers accounts about gang life, depression, cutting, drug addiction and sexual identity issues. But it’s also about how these students have dealt with these issues and are now moving forward with their lives.

The self-published book is available on www.amazon.com. A launch party is set for 5-7 p.m. June 6 at Revelations Yogurt, 527 Main St., Edmonds.

Two E-W seniors named Scholars

Katarina Nguyen and Louis Phan, both graduating seniors from Edmonds-Woodway High School, were named 2012 Washington Scholars.

The honor is bestowed on seniors statewide who perform in the top 1 percent, as well as for their leadership and community service achievements.

In past years, the honor came with hefty scholarships. Budget cuts ended that practice for this class and the class of 2011. The state Higher Education Coordinating Board still presents the awards in hopes recognition will help students get scholarships elsewhere, a spokesman said. “The Washington Scholar designation still is one of the most significant honors a student can receive in the state,” Gary Larson said.

Nguyen plans to study biomedical engineering.

The money would have been helpful, she said, but she understands cuts needed to be made. “I look at it more as a recognition of all the hard work I’ve done in high school, and ultimately it’s about the personal satisfaction.”

Carpentry students finish house

The Lynnwood Rotary Foundation supports the Edmonds School District carpentry class each year so the class can build a house.

The public is invited to help celebrate the 37th anniversary of this joint effort by coming to the open house from 2-4 p.m. June 14 at the latest completed house, 6400 208th St. SW in Lynnwood.

EdCC speakers hail from Lynnwood

Edmonds Community College celebrates its 45th annual commencement ceremony 7:30 p.m. June 15 at Comcast Arena at Everett, 2000 Hewitt Ave. In 2011-12, the college awarded 2,166 degrees, certificates, diplomas and GEDs to students from age 16 to 72.

This year’s student commencement speakers are Kristina Madden, 22, and Matvey Sineev, 18, both of Lynnwood. They are both headed to the University of Washington.

Madden graduates with her associate in pre-nursing degree. She started as a Running Start student in her junior year of high school, then later returned to Edmonds Community College in EdCAP, a program that provides an opportunity for young adults to earn a high school diploma in a college environment.

Sineev, a Running Start student, graduates with his associate of arts degree as well as his high school diploma from Meadowdale High School.

While attending college, Sineev has participated on his high school swim team and Chamber Orchestra and worked as a lifeguard at the Lynnwood Recreation Center and as an English tutor at EdCC. He is an Eagle Scout and an Assistant Scoutmaster with Boy Scout Troop 67 and a volunteer and participant with Lynnwood Rotary and at his church.

Sineev is also an avid bike commuter. He traveled 30 minutes by bike to the college to take classes every day.

Pray off MHS seniors at baccalaureate

The Meadowdale High School class of 2012 baccalaureate ceremony is set for 2-3 p.m. June 10 in the high school’s great hall, 6002 168th St. SW, Lynnwood.

The public is invited to join the faith-based celebration offering hope and encouragement to graduating seniors.

The keynote speaker will be Principal Dale Cote, who leaves this summer to take a position as support director at the Juanita Learning Community in the Lake Washington School District.

Trumpeter performs with LHS jazz bands

The Lynnwood High School jazz program will perform with Bobby Shew at 7 p.m. June 11 in the school theater, 18218 North Road, Bothell.

“This event is different from other concerts because were preparing music that is scored for Bobby’s professional groups and the music can be very demanding,” band and orchestra director Amy Stevenson said in a press release.

Shew is a veteran of famous big band orchestras, lead trumpeter for numerous pop stars and can be heard on the theme songs and soundtracks of TV shows and movies.

The concert also will feature LHS’s second jazz band directed by Patrick West and the Alderwood Middle School jazz band directed by Ron Madden.

Tickets are $12, available at the school ASB office or online at www.edmonds.wednet.edu/lhs. Proceeds benefit the LHS music program.

The event is sponsored by Kennelly Keys Music and Yamaha’s band and orchestral division.

The public celebration will be held at Woolsey Stadium on the CRISTA Ministries campus, 19303 Fremont Ave. N, Shoreline.
