SHORELINE
Shorecrest’s boys basketball team ended six years of misery against rival Shorewood Jan. 31.
The Scots routed the Thunderbirds 71-37 at Shorecrest to end a 12-game losing streak to Shorewood.
Shorecrest last beat Shorewood on Jan. 23, 2001.
“I hope this is a sign of things to come,” junior point guard Peter Meyers said.
Shorecrest junior forward Mark Golike scored a game-high 20 points in only 13 minutes of playing time. He made six of eight shots and eight of nine free throws.
“It felt so good to win,” Golike said.
Shorecrest had much to prove after it played a lackluster game in a 46-43 loss to Shorewood on Dec. 12.
“We didn’t play as well as we should have the first time,” Golike said. “We knew we were better than that.”
The Scots worked the ball inside early in the game to Golike, who scored nine points in the first quarter.
“That’s initially what got us going,” Shorecrest head coach Brian Fischer said.
Junior guard Yev Zuyev buried a 30-foot 3-pointer at the first quarter buzzer to put the Scots up 17-9. Shorecrest built a 34-15 halftime lead behind three second-quarter 3-pointers by junior forward Anthony Jochim. Shorecrest made eight 3-pointers in the game, on 8-of-16 shooting.
Golike added 11 points in the third quarter as Shorecrest pulled away to take a 54-26 lead.
“He didn’t have much resistance,” Shorewood head coach Shawn Hall said. “They were hitting him and he was either getting fouled or getting to the basket.”
Hall said his team seemed “mentally tired.”
“We just didn’t get into our presses or traps,” Hall said. “We were slow.”
Staying competitive for a full 32 minutes is something the Thunderbirds have struggled to do this season.
“We’re having a tough year,” Hall said. “We hustle but I don’t think we believe in it completely.”
Zuyev finished with 11 points, a team-high five rebounds and five assists. Meyers scored five points and dished out six assists. Senior guard Jeff Batt added a season-best seven points and four steals.
Shorecrest made 53 percent of its shots from the field for the game. The bench played most of the fourth quarter.
“I thought we clicked on all cylinders,” Fischer said. “Everybody contributed to the game. We never let up.”
Junior guard Taylor Hartman led Shorewood with nine points, while Tomas Sanchez and Andrew Haug scored six points apiece.
Shorewood (2-13 Western Conference South Division, 2-17 overall) lost to Edmonds-Woodway 56-41 Feb. 2, beat Lynnwood 51-47 in overtime Feb. 3 and lost to Jackson 59-44 Feb. 6.
