EDMONDS — Shorecrest’s playoff chances may have vanished a few weeks ago, but the hard-luck Scots still managed to end the season on an upswing.
After starting league play a disappointing 0-7, Shorecrest closed out 2003 with convincing victories over Lynnwood and Mountlake Terrace.
It was the first back-to-back Western Conference 4A South Division wins for the Scots since they opened the 2001 season 3-0.
“This is the way it should have been all along,” Scots coach Mike Wollan said following Shorecrest’s 42-7 romp of Terrace Nov. 6 at Edmonds Stadium.
The Scots (2-7 league, 3-7 overall) reached the end zone on their first five possessions to grab a 35-0 lead over the Hawks.
Junior quarterback Jon Glancy completed 14 of 21 passes for 255 yards and three touchdowns, pushing the first-year starter’s season totals to 1,742 yards and nine TDs.
“The expectations for Jon in the beginning were that I was going to nurse him along,” Wollan said. “But he proved he could step up and I expect big things from him next year.”
Glancy was five of eight for 77 yards on Shorecrest’s first possession. Sam Kastel caught three passes for 52 yards on the 11-play, 82-yard drive, including a 20-yarder that set up Shane Hoffman’s 1-yard touchdown run.
Hoffman then turned a screen pass into a 7-yard touchdown with 1:14 left in the first quarter and Glancy floated a 46-yard TD pass to Kastel at the 9:25 mark of the second quarter to make it 21-0.
Senior wideout J.D. Gardner joined in with a 38-yard TD catch three minutes later, then intercepted Hawks quarterback Brian Ellersick on Terrace’s very next play.
Gardner’s 21-yard return led to a 6-yard touchdown burst by fullback Collin Small with 5:24 to go in the first half.
The Hawks answered on their next possession with a 35-yard TD pass from Ellersick to Chris Uhl for their only score. A.J. Collins capped the scoring with 3:03 remaining in the third quarter with a 2-yard TD run for the Scots.
Hoffman rushed for 107 yards on 13 tries to go with his two scores and Kastel finished with five receptions for 128 yards. The Scots compiled 460 total yards and held the Hawks to 43 rushing and 113 passing yards.
“It was fun to watch them play the way I knew they could play all year,” Wollan said.
Shorecrest still had a shot at earning Wesco’s lone berth to the 3A district playoffs going into the final three weeks of the regular season.
But Meadowdale blanked the Scots 13-0 Oct. 24 to secure the postseason berth for the second straight year. Shorecrest could have greatly improved its chances of swiping the berth by pulling out some of its narrow losses.
The Scots were within a touchdown of league power Mariner well into the fourth quarter and three of Shorecrest’s defeats were by 13 points or less.
“We’re a couple breaks away from playing (in the district playoffs). There’s no question in my mind,” Wollan said.
“Every team up and down this league had a tough game when they played us. They had to work. We saw most of the starters for four quarters from everybody, so that means we were in games.”
By battling through their frustration, the Scots were able to wrap up the season with a pair of wins and send off their seniors in style.
“These guys should have been rewarded all year for the way they played. The past couple weeks it came together,” Wollan said.
“What a way to end to for the seniors. They stuck together through all the adversity we faced and finished strong.”
