Morehouse enters 21st season

After its two most successful seasons in school history, what does the Shorecrest volleyball team do for an encore?

The Scots, under coach Dave Morehouse who enters his 21st season this fall, finished third in Class 3A in 2006 and fourth in 2007.

The Scots have some new faces this year after losing seniors like first team all-league setter Anna Herold and second team outside hitter Tori Olsen to graduation.

But the team returns several key players including second team 5-9 senior setter Kerry Clavadetscher, second team 6-0 senior middle blocker Jamie McDonald and 5-10 senior outside hitter Gloria Tseng.

Shorecrest comes into the season ranked second in a statewide 3A poll, but Morehouse and company put little stock in that.

If the Scots are to return to state for the eighth straight year, the senior leaders, Clavadetscher, McDonald and Tseng, will have to show the way.

Shorecrest is the best 3A team in the Western Conference South Division, which figures to be fairly wide open.

Kamiak, which finished fourth in 4A last year, lost several key players but figures to retool and Edmonds-Woodway which also made it to state is expected to be solid as well.

“I think we could win Wesco (South) if we work hard,” McDonald said. “I think our biggest competition will be Edmonds-Woodway.”

While the Scots want to win their district and make state again, Clavadetscher said the young team doesn’t want to get in over its head in setting goals.

“Each game is going to be a challenge for us,” she said.

The Scots aren’t a tall team, so the focus will be on defense.

“We’re working hard on our defense,” Morehouse said. “We hope to work our butts off on defense. We hope to frustrate teams by putting the ball in play.”

“Most of our strength is going to come from the back row,” Clavadetscher said.

The Scots tallest player is 6-2 junior middle blocker Gabi Leif. Other key players are 5-9 junior middle blocker/right side hitter Nicole Swenson, 5-6 senior defensive specialist Erika Warren, 5-2 junior setter Casey Axelson, 5-6 junior defensive specialist Kelley Bayern, 5-9 junior outside hitter Brenna Lofquist and the only sophomore, 5-9 outside hitter Marina Stoermer.

All the varsity players play club volleyball.

Shorecrest started the year by beating Post Falls, Idaho in the Juanita High School Tournament, Sept. 6.
