EDMONDS — Shorecrest captured three of the six district berths up for grabs at last week’s three-team Western Conference 3A singles and doubles tournaments.
Sophomore Jonathan Tat squashed Meadowdale senior Andrew Wilson 6-2, 6-1 in the Oct. 24 singles final at Harbor Square Athletic Club to lock up Wesco’s top seed to this week’s Northwest District 3A championships.
Quarterfinal and semifinal matches are scheduled for today and the finals and consolation finals are set for 2 p.m. tomorrow at Sehome High School. The top three finishers in singles and doubles earn state berths.
“It should be pretty exciting,” Tat said. “Last year I played doubles and this year it’s singles, so it’s going to be different.”
After a rough start to the regular season, Tat feels he’s been playing some of his best tennis as of late.
“I’ve been playing a lot more and getting my game back to what it used to be,” Tat said.
Though he’s not familiar with the Northwest 3A League, Tat is optimistic about his chances of landing one of the three state berths.
“I’m shooting for second,” he said, “or if I have a really lucky match, maybe I’ll win.”
Two doubles teams will join Tat at districts. Robert Hildebrand and Spencer Huang came back from a set down two win both of their matches and claim Wesco’s No. 1 seed.
The seniors defeated Meadowdale brothers Alex and Drew Eli 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 in the semifinals, then rallied to beat Meadowdale’s Jared Dyson and Rey Hagens 2-6, 7-5, 6-3 in the Oct. 23 finals.
Sophomore Kevin Jacobson and junior Guy Morita overcame a semifinal loss to Dyson and Hagens to secure the third and final doubles berth.
Jacobson and Morita ousted the Eli brothers 6-2, 6-3 in the consolation final to earn a spot in a qualifier match against the Northwest 3A League’s sixth seed.
The winner of yesterday’s pigtail match at Harbor Square faces the Northwest League’s No. 1 seed in today’s opening round.
