SHORELINE — The Shorecrest boys swim team shook off the winter-break cobwebs to trounce Jackson 110-70 in a dual meet at Shoreline Pool Jan. 3.
“Last year (against Jackson) we just swam flat, the performances weren’t there,” said head coach Bill Murray. “This year they picked up where they left off, did what they needed to do. We had a lot of good swims.”
The Scots won nine of 11 swimming events and swept the relays.
Sophomore Tyler Hayden won two events, the 200-yard individual medley (2 minutes, 6.72 seconds) and 500 freestyle (5:02.77) and anchored the winning 200-freestyle and 400-freestyle relays.
Hayden is 100-percent healthy this season after battling a bulging disk in his back last year.
“It’s good to be not focusing on my injuries this year,” he said.
Hayden edged Jackson’s Jimmy Rogers at the wall to give the Scots the win in the 400 relay.
“It was a good way to cap off the meet,” he said.
Hayden and the Scots did not meet any state qualifying times but after only one day of significant practice after the break, the win was good to get, Hayden said.
“That (meeting state times) will come later in the season,” Hayden said. “This is a good victory for the team.”
Senior co-captain Jerry Wang won the 100 freestyle in 52.77 seconds while the other senior co-captain, Bo Rohrback, won the 50 freestyle in 24.54 seconds.
Sophomore Franklin Chien cruised to victory in the 100 butterfly in 1:00.36.
The Scots won the 200-medley relay, swam by Michael Zylstra, Miles Garrett, Chien and Rohrback in 1:53.78. The team of Rohrback, Wang, Zylstra and Hayden won the 200 relay in 1:38.38. The 400-free relay team of Wang, Quin Murphy, Chien and Hayden won in 3:42.62.
Morgan Law, a district qualifier last year who joined the team after a brief stint on the Scots wrestling team, won the diving competition. Jackson does not have any divers.
Wang said the Scots, with 30-plus swimmers out, are deeper than they have been in recent years and hope to challenge Shorewood for the Western Conference South Division dual-meet title.
