It had been close to two weeks since Shorecrest scored a goal or allowed one.

The Scots did both Tuesday night in their Northwest District 3A boys soccer tournament opener against Lynden and came out on top in dramatic fashion.

Eric Miller’s goal in the 89th minute gave Shorecrest a 2-1 double-overtime victory and two chances at earning a return trip to state.

The senior forward evaded a defender and headed in the game-winner off a bouncing lead pass from midfielder Kurtis Wong.

“We had three golden opportunities to finish it and avoid overtime, but our shots went wide,” Scots coach Teddy Mitalas said.

Shorecrest (10-3-4) was scheduled to face Northwest 3A League champion Squalicum (16-0-1) in a winner-to-state contest Thursday at Civic Field.

The winner advances to face the winner of Meadowdale/Burlington-Edison for the district championship at 3 p.m. May 15 at Civic Field; the losers of the semifinal games play prior to the title game for the third state berth.

Joey Crudo’s goal gave Shorecrest a 1-0 lead over Lynden at halftime, but the Lions pulled even in the second half.

“Lynden was a run-and-gun team. I didn’t expect that,” Mitalas said. “Our defense played real well. I’m not worried about our defense. What we need is somebody to step up and score some goals.”
