Shorecrest senior Kevin Ramos sprinted to a third-place finish in the 200 meters and fourth-place finish in the 100 meters at the Pasco Invite April 14.
Ramos ran the 200 in 23.13 seconds, 15 minutes after competing in the 400, Shorecrest coach Brandon Christensen said.
Ramos didn’t get off to a good start in the 100 but finished in 11.22.
Ramos scored all the points for the Shorecrest boys, who finished 26th with 11 points.
“He ran really well against some tough competition over there,” Christensen said.
Ramos ran six times during the day, including a leg of the 1,600 relay. Christensen said the purpose was to get in a good workout for Ramos and the other athletes before they taper their training for the district and state meet.
Shorecrest senior Cora Speidel finished eighth in the 100 meters with a time of 12.94 that puts her among the top six 100 runners in Class 3A.
“It’s her first time against some tough competition,” Christensen said. “She got off really well.”
Speidel also competed in the long jump and 400 relay.
“It’s going to be a tough decision to figure out what to do with her at the end of the year here,” Christensen said.
Shorewood’s Amanda Clark was the lone Thunderbird to place, finishing eighth in the 400 with a time of 61.16.
Clark hadn’t been training much because of strained thighs from cheerleading, but managed to come up with a breakout performance.
“In some respects it was a very nice surprise,” Shorewood coach Howie Wood said. “It bodes well for the rest of the season for her because she’s not hurt any more.”
Other highlights for the Scots included junior Marek Domanski’s throw of 144 feet, 10 inches in the discus, which is about 10 feet off the school record.
Senior Molly Gibson tied for 11th in the triple jump with a leap of 34 feet, 1/2 inch. She cleared 4-10 in the high jump.
The Shorecrest girls 1,600 relay of Gibson, Erin Springer, Danielle Oliver and Ashley Desharnias finished 15th overall with a time of 4:15.42.
Desharnias, a freshman, ran the fastest leg in 61 seconds.
“She’s just getting stronger as the season goes on,” Christensen said.
Roy McElmurry cleared 13-6 in the pole vault, which would have been good enough for seventh if he had cleared it on his first attempt. He finished 11th.
The Scots sent 24 athletes to Pasco. The athletes competed in rainy, windy conditions with temperatures in the 50s.
Shorewood sent nine athletes to the meet.
Other T-bird highlights included Justyn Cox’s 12th place finish in the triple jump. Cox’s leap of 41-8 3/4 was a personal best.
Kane Thomas set personal records of 52.64 in the 400 and 2:03.18 in the 800.
Other Shorewood competitors included Tyler Nichols in the shot put (40-2), Kelley Neubauer in the discus (121-3), James Danner in the javelin (139-6), Hannah King in the javelin (101-1), Caroline Soules in the high jump (4-10) and Janae Christiansen in the shot put (34-9 1/2).
