SHORELINE

The Shorecrest and Shorewood wrestling teams tuned up last week for meets this weekend that will determine who moves on to regionals Feb. 10.

Shorecrest travels to Sedro-Woolley today (Friday, Feb. 2) for the 3A subregional matches that begin at 5 p.m. Action continues tomorrow, Feb. 3 at 10 a.m. The top four placers move on to regionals Feb. 10 at Squalicum.

Shorewood competes in the 4A Northwest District meet at Marysville-Pilchuck High School starting today at 4 p.m. and continuing Saturday at 10 a.m. The top five placers move on to regionals at Snohomish High School Feb. 10. The sixth-place finisher earns a berth in a pigtail match against the third seed from District IV for a berth to regionals.

Shorecrest ended the regular season with a 48-29 victory over Mountlake Terrace at home to finish 2-6 in the Western Conference South Division and 3-10 overall. The Scots went winless in league last season. Four Scots senior co-captains, Ryan Pasic (135 pounds) and Kellan Sullivan (215), junior Roy McElmurry (160) and Robert Trevino (152) pinned their opponents. On Jan. 24, the Scots lost to Archbishop Murphy, 45-31 and beat Nathan Hale 54-22.

The Scots’ significant improvement shone through at the Lynden Invite Jan. 20. Shorecrest finished eighth with only seven wrestlers competing, a higher place than several teams with full 14-wrestler rosters. Coach Lee Thornhill said coaches from other schools told him this was the best Shorecrest team they’ve seen.

Meanwhile, Shorewood’s top wrestler Tim Hester (189) sat out the last two meets of the season after tweaking a shoulder Jan. 24. Hester (15-0) is expected to be ready for the district tournament and make a return trip to regionals. Hester competed at state for the first time last year.

Senior Michael Yun sports an 8-4 record at 112 pounds. He hopes for a return trip to regionals.

“Hopefully he can really peak at the right time at Wesco,” Moreno said.

Senior Matt Jensen, a 145-pounder with a 12-6 record, will try to earn a trip to regionals.

Shorewood lost to Archbishop Murphy 52-26 and beat Nathan Hale Jan. 24 at Shorecrest. The Thunderbirds ended the season with a 66-9 loss to Meadowdale to finish 1-7 in the Wesco South and 1-10 overall.
