The Shorecrest Scots weathered the storm – literally – and the Kamiak Knights and in doing so clinched their second Western Conference South Division title in three years.

Shorecrest scored three unanswered goals in the second half to defeat Kamiak 5-2 in a Wesco South game May 4 at Kamiak High School.

“We’re happy to bring the South title back to Shorecrest,” Shorecrest head coach Drew Thompson said. “We achieved our first goal of winning the division.”

In a game that was supposed to be a battle between the unstoppable force – Shorecrest entered the contest averaging over three goals a game – and the immovable object – Kamiak had shut out its opponents in six of its past seven contests – it was instead overshadowed by the wind and wild rain.

“I think the weather played a part. The ball was skipping around,” Thompson said.

Shorecrest captain and midfielder Garrett Musar said, “It was like taking a shower for 80 minutes,” before noting that it didn’t matter because winning another Wesco South title “felt great.”

Sophomore forward Glenn Paden scored a goal and added two assists and Musie Ghebremichael and Jeremy Novack each scored two goals for the Scots (8-0-0 in league, 14-1-0 overall).

“As a forward it’s a little tough to get shots. The ball skips faster,” Paden said about the rain, which seemed to come from all angles.

Kamiak got on the board first when Tyler Hawkinson scored on a pass from Clayton Dubin in the 7th minute.

Shorecrest answered two minutes later when Novack scored on a Paden assist.

Paden scored his first goal at the 16 minute mark when he caught a nifty behind-the-leg pass from Jonathan Cho, before skipping it past Kamiak’s goalkeeper.

Kamiak knotted the score 10 minutes later when Hawkinson scored his second goal of the night on another assist by Dubin.

“We stuck with the game plan,” Thompson said of his second half strategy, “We knew that (Clayton Dubin) and (Tyler Hawkinson) were dangerous guys. We made sure to stay close to (Hawkinson).”

Kamiak (6-2, 8-7) dropped its second straight after recording six straight shutouts to start the division schedule.

After a slow start to the season that saw the Knights win just two of their seven non-conference games, Kamiak kicked it in gear winning six straight without allowing a goal.

“We’re coming together as a team, playing well,” Kamiak head coach Garfield Scott said.

Scott was quick to compliment the Scots by saying, “They’re a good team. They deserve all the accolades.”

Thompson also complimented his team’s hard work after halftime by saying, “We know we have a good team. I’m proud of the guys. They worked hard and played with a lot of heart.”

Shorecrest won the title in 2007 and clinched a state berth, something that is also on the Scots’ to-do list this season.
