OLYMPIA — The state Senate on March 9 passed four bills to implement the Washington Learns report, which recommended innovative improvements to revolutionize early learning, K-12 education, educator preparation, and math, science and technology education.

“Today is a new day for education in Washington,” said Sen. Rosemary McAuliffe, D-Bothell, who sponsored a bill to create math, science and technology programs that will put Washington students on the cutting edge. “These fundamental changes to our education system will make a real difference in students’ lives.”

Sen. Steve Hobbs, D-Lake Stevens, sponsored a bill to phase in an all-day kindergarten program.

“Investing in children early will pay dividends throughout their life,” said Hobbs. “Families in which two parents work will especially benefit from this program.”

One of the other bills that was passed would make investments in teacher professional development and create a statewide leadership academy for school administrators. The fourth bill would improve early learning programs.

Gov. Chris Gregoire created the Washington Learns committee in 2006 to study how to improve the education system. The Washington Learns bills now head to the House of Representatives for consideration.
