Senior dance group looking for members

Silver Steppers dance group is accepting new members for the 2009-10 year.

A staple of the community, YMCA Silver Steppers is a dance group comprised of senior citizens. Dedicated to serving the community by promoting healthy living through the exercise of dance, they perform monthly at preschools, elementary schools, nursing and retirement homes, community shows and fairs.

The group’s repertoire includes Broadway, country, Latin, hula and, of course, the rock and roll of the 1950s.

New member orientation is from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 5, at the Mill Creek YMCA, 13723 Puget Park Drive, Everett.

Be prepared to learn a short routine, meet members and see what is involved.

Shred your documents

Mill Creek’s Document Destruction Day is back by popular demand.

Mill Creek Councilwoman Donna Michelson is hosting the free event, which will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 19, at the City Hall Annex, 15720 Main St.

The event is open to everyone, not just residents of Mill Creek. Complimentary on-site destruction of your personal documents is provided by Shred-It. It isn’t necessary to remove staples, paperclips or fasteners.

A local food bank will also be on hand taking voluntary donations of non-perishable food items.

Learn about native plants

The Mill Creek Garden Club is kicking off its 2009-10 season with the start of its regular monthly meetings.

The new season starts with guest speaker Rita Moore from the Washington Native Plant Society, who will speak at the club’s first meeting. The meeting is scheduled for 11 a.m. Sept. 9 at the Mill Creek Country Club.

The Garden Club is open to all serious or social gardeners. Annual dues are $25 and the luncheon fee is $18 for members and $20 for guests.

Friends of the Library meeting

Looking to meet other bookworms like yourself? Then join the Friends of the Mill Creek Library, or attend their monthly meetings.

There are many opportunities for volunteers to help plan library events, such as the Fall Used Book Sale to be held on Sept. 26. All proceeds from the sale go to adult and children’s programs, book discussions, forums, furnishings and literacy grants.

The meetings are open to anyone interested. The next one is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Sept. 9 at the Mill Creek Library, 15429 Bothell-Everett Highway.

Library trustee vacancy to be filled

Snohomish County residents with a desire to serve public libraries are encouraged to apply for a vacancy on the Sno-Isle Libraries Board of Trustees. Sno-Isle Libraries is an inter-county library district serving most of Snohomish County and all of Island County. The Board consists of five Snohomish County residents and two Island County residents. The upcoming vacancy is for a Snohomish County position; preference will be given to applicants from south Snohomish County (Brier, Mountlake Terrace, Edmonds, Lynnwood, Mukilteo, Mill Creek and surrounding unincorporated areas). The position would fill the remaining three years of an unexpired seven-year term and begin immediately.

The Sno-Isle Libraries serves more than 646,000 residents in Snohomish and Island counties. Domestic violence education class

Domestic Violence Services of Snohomish County is hosting a six-week community education and volunteer training class.

Classes are provided free of charge to volunteers willing to commit to 10 hours of volunteer time within a six-month period for Domestic Violence Services.

Topics include an overview of domestic violence; domestic violence and the effect on children; domestic violence, drugs and alcohol; safety planning; and sexual assault.

The classes will be held 5:30-8:30 p.m. Monday evenings from Sept. 28 through Oct. 26 at the agency’s downtown Everett location. A Saturday class will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 17. Light snacks and break time will be provided.

Domestic Violence Services of Snohomish County is dedicated to ending domestic abuse by providing a wide range of services for victims and by facilitating social change.

Golf to raise cancer research funds

The Pink Polka Dots Guild will hold its third annual Sydney Coxon Memorial golf tournament and silent auction/dinner Sept. 12 at Legion Memorial Golf Course in Everett.

The event is open to the public and direct donations are also welcome to help in the fight against brain cancers. The cost is $125 for golfing and the buffet dinner, or $60 for just dinner. Both options include the auction and raffle drawings in the evening.

Sponsored by Integrated Technologies Inc., all proceeds from the event support brain tumor research at Seattle Children’s Hospital and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.

The Pink Polka Dots Guild was founded by three now-teenaged classmates in memory of their friend, Sydney Coxon, who died at age 11 of a brain tumor. As a Seattle Children’s Hospital Junior Guild, the majority of members are teens or younger.

Massage with a cause

Mill Creek Massage Envy is teaming with Susan G. Komen for the Cure to host Massage for the Cure on Sept. 15.

During the one-day event, the massage clinic will offer $35 one-hour therapeutic sessions, with $10 from each massage being donated to the Puget Sound Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure to support breast cancer education, research, screening and treatment initiatives.

Since the first Massage for the Cure event in 2005, Massage Envy has raised more than $800,000 for Susan G. Komen for the Cure. This year, Massage Envy’s goal is to raise $500,000, with an estimated 590 Massage Envy clinics in 40 states participating.

High school book club

Do you enjoy reading and want to discuss books with other teens? Then the Mill Creek Library’s High School Book Club is the place for you.

The group will discuss Jeanette Walls’ “The Glass Castle: A Memoir” at 7 p.m. Sept. 24. “The Glass Castle” chronicles Walls’ upbringing at the hands of her eccentric parents.

The book club is open to teens ages 15-18, and newcomers are always welcome.
