Senior Spotlight 2008-09

Geoff Meinken, Lynnwood

Sports: Football, basketball, track.

Goals: To make the playoffs in football for the first time in 10 years.

Honors: Honorable mention all-Wesco running back; most improved player, basketball; honorable mention, all-Wesco 400 relay team; 5 (the perfect score) on the AP European history test as a sophomore.

Highlights: Beating Mountlake Terrace 28-7 in football last year.

Pregame routine: “On game days I try to get a good amount of sleep, have some sort of high-calorie meal, listen to my iPod and just relax. I also tend to find myself stretching at random times during the day.”

Biggest asset: Size and speed. “I would rather be known for my motor. It’s something I am working on: to be known as an over-achiever whose motor never quits.”

One word that describes yourself: Learning.

Post-high school plans: To attend Washington State. “Hopefully I will be admitted into the honors program there and play football. I want to study pre-law and would love to find an interesting major involving European history.”

Athletic role models: Isaiah Kasvinsky, Chris Long, Michael Phelps.

Favorite subjects: Math, science, English, history.

Leisure activities: Hanging out with friends, playing video games. Running.

Favorite TV shows: South Park, Scrubs, college football/basketball, NFL.

Favorite musical artists: The Used.

Hanna Fjortoft, Meadowdale

Sports: Basketball, track.

Goals: To help get Meadowdale back to the state tournament and have a successful senior season. Also to maintain my GPA, and make lots of good memories with my friends and teammates.

Honors: Second team, all-Wesco South Division basketball; Maverick award; basketball captain, junior and senior seasons; track captain, junior season.

Highlights: Making varsity basketball as a freshman and advancing to state all three years.

Pregame routine: Eat a good meal, drink lots of water, visualize the game and pray.

Biggest asset: Her determination.

One word that describes yourself: Outgoing.

Post-high school plans: To attend a four-year university and focus on majoring in journalism and possibly playing basketball.

Athletic role models: Michael Jordan, Michael Phelps.

Favorite subjects: English, art.

Leisure activities: Shopping with her three sisters, riding bikes, drinking Starbucks, listening to music.

Favorite TV shows: None, other than the Olympics.

Favorite musical artists: The Fray, Augustana.

Roger O’Neill, Meadowdale

Sports: Basketball, baseball.

Goals: To win two Western Conference South Division championships and to win two state championships.

Honors: Baseball captain. Defensive most valuable player, basketball.

Highlights: Playing at Safeco Field for two years in a row. Beating Mount Vernon in triple overtime to advance to the state basketball tournament.

Pregame routine: Pancakes on every game morning, Subway before games. “For basketball, I usually take a 30-minute power nap before I go to the gym, shoot during freshman game in the back gym, watch JV game.”

Biggest asset: Versatility. “In baseball I play P, C, 1B, and 3B. In basketball I can play point guard, shooting guard, or small forward.”

One word that describes yourself: Overzealous.

Post-high school plans: Attend a four-year university and hopefully play one or two sports there.

Athletic role models: My siblings. Kellie and Kristen both played basketball at the University of Washington and Kristen now plays for the Seattle Storm. My brother Richard played baseball at St. Martins University. “I admire their hard work.”

Favorite subjects: Math and history.

Leisure activities: “Fantasy Football. Not your typical league. I run the most intense league west of the Mississippi. I also run the student section at our football and girls basketball games. And I challenge anyone, anytime to a game of wiffle ball.”

Favorite TV shows: Family Guy, Pardon The Interruption.

Favorite musical artists: Kanye West, P-Weez.

Paul Clingan, Mountlake Terrace

Sports: Football, basketball, baseball.

Goals: To win a state baseball title.

Honors: First-team, all-Wesco South Division catcher; baseball team captain; basketball and baseball defensive player of the year for Mountlake Terrace.

Highlights: Making varsity baseball as a freshman; two trips to the state playoffs.

Pregame routine: “I do the same stretches in the same order before every baseball game and I listen to either Brooks &Dunn or Garth Brooks.”

Biggest asset: Work ethic.

One word that describes yourself: Different.

Post-high school plans: To play baseball at Washington State.

Athletic role models: Jason Varitek.

Favorite subjects: Teacher assistant.

Leisure activities: Hanging out with friends, long naps.

Favorite TV shows: Sportscenter, 24, CMT.

Favorite musical artists: Brooks &Dunn, Garth Brooks.

Michael Keane, Meadowdale

Sports: Swimming, maybe golf.

Goals: To take top 3 in the 100 breaststroke and 200 individual medley at the state championships.

Honors: MVP in swimming last three years.

Highlights: Taking top 10 in the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke at state.

Pregame routine: “I warm up right before every race and listen to pump up music before every race.”

Biggest asset: Well-rounded skills.

One word that describes yourself: Dedicated.

Post-high school plans: To swim for the Air Force Academy.

Athletic role models: Gary Hall Jr., Michael Phelps, Ed Moses.

Favorite subjects: Math, science.

Leisure activities: Flying planes.

Favorite TV shows: Scrubs.

Favorite musical artists: Three Days Grace, Breaking Benjamin, Chevelle, Tech Nine.

Calin Fellows, Edmonds-Woodway

Sports: Volleyball.

Goals: “As a team we want to take first in Wesco and make it back to state and place this year, and personally I want to be an all-state selection.”

Honors: First-team, all-Wesco South Division as a sophomore and junior; all-tournament team at nationals.

Highlights: Making varsity as a freshman and placing ninth at state last year.

Pregame routine: “I try to not put too much pressure on myself before games so I try to keep the atmosphere light, but during hitting warm-ups I start to focus on the game ahead of me.”

Biggest asset: “My coaches have always said that I am a great teammate and I like to keep the energy high on the court.”

One word that describes yourself: Competitive.

Post-high school plans: Attending Boise State University and playing volleyball. Plans to major in physical therapy or related field.

Athletic role models: Michael Phelps, Keri Walsh.

Favorite subjects: Sports medicine, English, math.

Leisure activities: Outdoors.

Favorite TV shows: Reality programs, Bravo.

Favorite musical artists: Taylor Swift, John Mayer.

Kori Seidlitz, Mountlake Terrace

Sports: Basketball, softball.

Goals: “As a softball team captain I want to be a good leader. I would really like to help our team make it to state this year for softball. I would also like to throw a perfect game.”

Honors: Softball co-captain; first-team, all-Wesco South Division pitcher.

Highlights: Throwing a no-hitter, shutout against Stanwood to help the Hawks to a 1-0 victory at districts.

Pregame routine: “I always will turn up the volume and listen to a good song. Last year I would go over to Jake (my boyfriend’s) house for pancakes after a basketball game and before a softball game. … My parents always bring me a PB&J before a softball game to help keep my energy up.”

Biggest asset: Being able to stay composed during stressful situations.

One word that describes yourself: Driven.

Post-high school plans: “I plan to play D-1 softball at a school where I can receive a good education.”

Athletic role models: Jennie Finch.

Favorite subjects: History, English.

Leisure activities: Reading, bicycling, listening to music.

Favorite TV shows: Monk, Numbers, Heroes, NCIS, Eureka, The Girls Next Door, The Closer.

Favorite musical artists: Taylor Swift, Sugarland, OneRepublic, and Angels &Airwaves.

Tony Heard, Edmonds-Woodway

Sports: Football, basketball, possibly track.

Goals: To make it back to the state football semifinals.

Honors: First-team, all-Wesco South Division offense; second-team, all-Wesco South Division defense; Associated Press Class 4A co-player of the year; 2007-08 Gatorade Washington Football Player of the Year.

Highlights: Two straight state semifinal football appearances in the Tacoma Dome. Being named the Gatorade Player of the Year.

Pregame routine: Eating tuna.

Biggest asset: His strength.

One word that describes yourself: Determined.

Post-high school plans: To play football at a Pac-10 school.

Athletic role models: Patrick Willis.

Favorite subjects: English.

Leisure activities: Going to the movies, working out, playing basketball.

Favorite TV shows: ESPN, BET.

Favorite musical artists: Hip hop, R&B, country.

Dylan Burnett-Lewis, Lynnwood

Sports: Football, track.

Goals: “I hope to break Lynnwood’s record for furthest throw in javelin, which is 204 feet, 6 inches, and take first at state this year,” said Burnett-Lewis, who currently second in school history. “My goal is to throw further than 205 during the 09 track season. … I would also like to excel as wide receiver in football. This is my first year in this position and am hopeful I can do well with practice and hard work.”

Honors: High Points award for track; co-captain of track and football; first-team, all-Wesco South Division track in javelin; second in state in javelin.

Highlights: Qualifying for state in the javelin during his sophomore year. Receiving letters from colleges.

Pregame routine: “For track, I try to be alone so I can concentrate on what I need to do. I don’t want to get distracted.”

Biggest asset: “Even though javelin is an individual sport, I do what I can to get points for the team and myself. I fill spots when needed on the track team … I play sports for myself because I really enjoy them, but I also am a team player and want the best for any team I am on and will do whatever I can to help reach our goals.”

One word that describes yourself: Determined.

Post-high school plans: Study business in college. Work on getting his pilot’s license, possible commercial.

Athletic role models: Olympians because they are the best of the best at their events. “They have worked hard and committed themselves to their sport.”

Favorite subjects: Physical education, business.

Leisure activities: Snowboarding, water sports.

Favorite TV shows: Family Guy.

Favorite musical artists: The Dream, Tyga and Ray J.

Chase Anselment, Meadowdale

Sports: Baseball.

Goals: To win state.

Honors: First-team, all state; first-team, all Wesco South Division.

Highlights: Advancing to state and playing at Safeco Field for two straight years.

Pregame routine: “I really do not have one.”

Biggest asset: Work ethic.

One word that describes yourself: Dedicated.

Post-high school plans: To attend the University of Washington; to continue to play baseball.

Athletic role models: Jim Edmonds.

Favorite subjects: History.

Leisure activities: Hanging out with friends.

Favorite TV shows: South Park.

Favorite musical artists: Lil Wayne and Nas.
