Jazz vocalist and Mill Creek resident Nadine Shanti will join forces with the Everett Symphony for an appearance on their well-received Popular Music series at 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 24 in the Everett Civic Auditorium. Shanti will perform in the first of the Pops Concerts on a night entitled “All That Jazz.”

The Symphony has commissioned an arrangement of her original tune, “Hot Coffee Blues” for the performance. The Everett Symphony is in its 64th Season and is undergoing an expansion of programs and offerings under the direction of Dr. Paul Elliott Cobbs.

“I have worked really hard to become an accomplished performer and writer. With everything that I learned to deliver these songs to the Symphony, I now feel qualified to call myself an arranger,” said Shanti.

Shanti studied arranging as part of her training as a music educator and a musicologist. She has also been arranging her tunes for 5-piece ensembles, but this is the first time she challenged herself to arrange for a full orchestra.

“I just called a couple of friends who are experienced in this area and said ‘If I get stuck, you’re going to help me, right?’”

Shanti is also in rehearsal for a February concert in Illinois, where she will perform her tribute to Cole Porter. She then travels to Murray State in Kentucky where she will premier her arrangements of Jazz and Broadway Favorites for 10-piece Swing Band.

Tickets are $10 to $27, available by calling the Everett Symphony at 425-257-8382.
