Samantha Young continued her blazing start to the season by easily winning the first of two Northwest District 3A zone diving meets last weekend.
The Shorecrest sophomore tallied 347.15 points to finish more than 100 points ahead of the field at the 11-dive meet Oct. 4 at Fidalgo Pool in Anacortes.
Though Young’s score eclipsed the state qualifying standard of 280 points, she failed to complete one of her six optional dives.
“Do I have any doubts she’ll qualify the next time? No,” Shoreline District dive coach Keela Carter said.
Young has taken first at each of Shorecrest’s dual meets and her six-dive average is hovering around 260 points. Last year, her season-high was 247.
“She’s been progressing well,” Carter said. “We’re adding in a lot of new dives so her scores come down sometimes. But it’s important for her development as an athlete.”
Shorecrest’s Kristina Bendiksen, Corina Sugarman and Holly Thue placed third, fifth and seventh at the zone meet and qualified for next month’s district championships.
