Numbers are on the rise for the Shorecrest cross country program.

The Scots have added about 15 runners from last season, pushing their combined boys and girls roster close to 50.

The girls team didn’t lose any varsity runners to graduation. Eden Weldetnsae has taken over the top spot on the ladder after missing her junior season due to illness.

Junior Jessica Tapley was the only Shorecrest runner to finish in the top 20 at last year’s league championships. Sophomore Julia Duranti and junior Kate Haller round out the top four.

The Shorecrest boys return six of their varsity seven and a sophomore has surged to the front of the pack. Kevin Ruhlman moves up from the middle of the ladder to the No. 1 slot.

“Kevin had a big increase in mileage this summer,” Scots coach Lane Loland said. “He’s improved a lot and is definitely our leader right now. A couple guys who were ahead of him last year haven’t raced yet, so we’ll see where they fit in.”

The lone senior in the top seven is Chris Hansen, who is followed closely by juniors Michael Baker, Kurtis Wong, Bo Rohrback and Tyler Stevermer. Baker spent most of his sophomore season atop the ladder.

“It’s going to be a pretty tight pack,” Loland said. “They run pretty well together. They’re consistent about pushing each other.”
