Nigerians from throughout the area will gather Sunday, Sept. 2, for the annual Anglican service of Matins and Holy Communion at 10:30 a.m. at St. Barnabas Anglican Church, 2340 N. 155th St., in Shoreline.

Officiating at the service will be Bishop Richard Boyce, Fr. Harley Crain — rector of St. Barnabas, and a guest preacher from Nigeria. Assisting will be Humphrey Ezeonwu of Shoreline, a postulant for Holy Orders in the Anglican Province of America.

Traditional Anglican hymns will be sung simultaneously in Igbo and English and traditional Nigerian Christian Music accompanied by drumming will be heard as the congregation presents its gifts during the offertory. Nigerian food will be served in a tent following the service.

This year is the 150th anniversary of the arrival of Christian missionaries in the Igbo area of Nigeria.

About half of the normal Sunday congregation at St. Barnabas is from Nigeria. The parish is part of the Anglican Province of America, which, with the Reformed Episcopal Church, is in full communion with the 18 million member Anglican Church of Nigeria.

The Rector of St. Barnabas is the Rev. Harley Crain, a graduate of Fuller Theological Seminary and Seabury Western Theological Seminary. He interned at a Nigerian Anglican parish in the Chicago area, and recently St. Barnabas has had considerable growth under his leadership.

St. Barnabas uses the 1928 Book of Common Prayer. Traditional Anglican teaching and practice are complimented by standard hymns from the 1940 Hymnal.
