Ridgecrest competed in Math Olympiad
The newly-formed Ridgecrest Elementary Math Olympiad Team competed in the Shoreline Math Olympiad Competition March 8 at Shorecrest High School.
The school grew in size this year with the closure of North City Elementary and had not had a Math Olympiad Team for several years. Ronda Holmdahl, fourth grade coach, and Rock Moulton, fifth/sixth grade coach, started the program last October with 35 students meeting weekly to work Math Olympiad problems and prepare for the March 8 district competition.
That day, 21 of the 33 Ridgecrest students earned individual medals. In addition, five of the nine Ridgecrest teams earned team medals.
Shoreline resident leads Ombudsman
The Office of the Education Ombudsman, a new state agency, has opened its doors in two locations: Olympia and the Northgate area of Seattle. The agency takes complaints about schools and districts.
The agency director is Adie Simmons, long-time Shoreline resident, community volunteer, and former Shoreline Public Schools Program Coordinator.
Simmons’ 25-year career includes developing and directing programs related to childrens’ education and health. Most recently, she managed the Office of Family and Community Partnerships, which coordinated between Seattle Public Schools and the City of Seattle.
Simmons was appointed by Governor Gregoire.
The office has four ombudsmen helping complainants. Two offer consulting services; two intervene in formal complaints. An Intake and Referral Specialist provides callers with information and resources about the public school system and how to file a formal complaint. Interpreters are available.
