Shoreline Police is joining other police departments on May 30 in a Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run, an event that is the prelude to the opening ceremonies for the Special Olympics of Washington’s 2003 Summer Games.
This is the first year Shoreline Police has participated in the event, said Capt. Clem Rusk.
In addition to Shoreline, representatives from police agencies in Lynnwood, Bothell, Mill Creek, Mountlake Terrace, Edmonds, Everett and Seattle will participate.
Officers from these and other departments in Snohomish, King and Pierce counties will run along Highway 99 starting in Everett and work their way south to Ft. Lewis, south of Tacoma. Officers will be accompanied by Special Olympic participants and officers in cars.
Shoreline police officers will receive the torch from Edmonds officers at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, May 30 starting at 205th Street on Aurora. The officers will run 10-minute miles down Aurora and turn over the torch to Seattle officers at 145th Street by 10 a.m.
Cate Irvin, local events and promotions manager for Special Olympics of Washington, said that approximately 50 agencies from throughout the state are participating, with five different torch runs coming in from all areas of the state.
“We’ve actually gotten the majority of agencies on board to run a torch,” Irvin said.
The event ends with the lighting of the torch at McChord Air Force Base in Tacoma during the opening ceremonies.
The Law Enforcement Torch Run is a Special Olympics fund raiser that takes place in all 50 states, all 10 Canadian provinces and in 30 countries.
According to Special Olympics of Washington, the event has raised more than $1.6 million in Washington during the 18 years the event has taken place in this state. Last year’s efforts raised a record of more than $254,000.
