Environmental

car washing

The City of Shoreline is offering community groups a way to make car wash fundraisers more environmentally friendly. A Vacuboom is available on loan from the City by calling (206) 546- 2659. The Vacu-boom device collects soapy water and pumps it to a lawn, a sink or to another drain that leads to the wastewater treatment system. Usually when a car is washed in a driveway, the waste water flows down the driveway, along the street and into a storm drain. From there, the soapy water flows directly into Shoreline’s waterways and streams.

Night Out Against Crime August 5

This year the Night Out Against Crime is 7 to 10 p.m. on Tuesday, August 5. Lake Forest Park and Shoreline neighborhoods are encouraged to celebrate this event with block parties, neighborhood meetings, community BBQ’s, ice cream parties and potlucks.

Citizens in both cities are invited to lock their doors, turn on the outside lights and spend the evening outside with neighbors and police.

A key to crime prevention, say police, are neighbors who know each other, and know who belongs in a community. Be sure to say hello to walkers in the neighborhood; they prevent crime by their presence in the neighborhood.

Last year 18 neighborhoods in Lake Forest Park participated in the event. To plan an event in Lake Forest Park, contact Crime Prevention Coordinator Pam Martin who can facilitate with getting a permit to close the street, help organize the event and provide information about how to start a block watch organization in the neighborhood. Contact Pam by phone at 206-364-8216 ext. 545, or via email at pmartin@ci.lake-forest-park.wa.us.

For more information on participating in National Night Out in Shoreline, visit the website www.nationalnightout.org or contact one of the Police Storefront officers: officer Leona Obstler with the Shoreline Police Westside Neighborhood Center at 206-546-3636 or officer Angela Holland with the Eastside Neighborhood Center at 206-363-8424.

Fairley receives leadership award

Sen. Darlene Fairley, D-Lake Forest Park, was presented with an outstanding leadership award this past week by the King County Parent Coalition for Developmental Disabilities.

Parent Coalition officials said the award recognizes Fairley’s work toward protecting developmental disabilities funding in the state budget this legislative session, which ended last month.

This past Legislative session Fairley proposed downsizing Fircrest School, an institution in Shoreline for people with developmental disabilities and relocating residents to other institutions or community group homes. She also moved to establish a legacy trust for developmentally disabled people awaiting services.
