EDMONDS — Even on a cool May evening, the Shorewood girls track team decided it couldn’t spare coach Howie Wood the ceremonial ice-water bath to celebrate its fifth consecutive Western Conference South Division title.
Shorewood blew away the competition, scoring 199 points to second-place Edmonds-Woodway’s 104, May 12 at Edmonds Stadium. This year, the T-birds accumulated the highest point total of its five championships.
The 4A District 1 meet kicked off May 17 at Stanwood High School and continues today, Friday, May 19, at Stanwood. Field event finals start at 5 p.m. and track finals start at 6 p.m.
The Shorewood girls with the best opportunity to finish in the top three in an individual event and move on to the state meet May 26-27, include senior Lauren Sego in the javelin; junior Hanna Schliephake in the 100-meter hurdles; senior Kathryn Claus in the long jump; sophomore Caroline Soules in the high jump; senior Liz Schoch and sophomore Amanda Clark in the 200 meters; senior Hanna Vietmeier in the 3,200 and 1,600 meter races; and freshman Dominique Amor in the 1,600. The 400- and 800-meter relays also have a shot to advance to Pasco, Wood said.
The Thunderbirds proved to be the deepest team at the divisional meet and had four individual winners: Sego in the javelin (127 feet, 6 inches); sophomore Soules in the high jump (5-2); senior Anyka Ozog in the discus (113-2); and Schliephake in the 100-meter hurdles (16.41 seconds).
Nearly all the Shorewood girls improved their May 10 preliminary placings in the finals to build the insurmountable lead.
Vietmeier took second in the 3,200 meters with a time of 11 minutes, 27.17 seconds. Amor finished second in the 1,600 meters with a time of 5:15.22, less than two seconds behind Edmonds-Woodway’s Kate Southcote-Want.
Vietmeier took third (5:15.77) and teammate Sara Levy finished fifth (5:17.2). All three Shorewood runners got their season-best times in the race.
“Hannah is the one that pushed the pace (for the T-birds) on that one,” Wood said of the 1,600. “She made that thing happen.”
Amor said Vietmeier talked to her, encouraging her throughout the race.
“I was inspired that she wanted me to do well,” Amor said.
Despite battling a strained left hip flexor, Claus took second in the long jump with a leap of 16-2 and set a personal record in the triple jump with a jump of 33 feet.
Schoch finished second in the 200 with a time of 27.39 seconds, Clark took third with a time of 27.57 and sophomore Elody Adjibly placed sixth in 28.2. Clark also placed third in the 100 with a time of 13.30.

The Thunderbirds’ 400 relay of Christa Brediger, Schoch, Schliephake and Clark, finished third (51.19). The 800 relay of Adjibly, Brediger, Schoch and Clark, took second (1:47.7). Claus will replace Brediger in the 800 lineup at districts, Wood said. The 1,600 relay finished fifth in 4:15.83.
In the field events, junior Jenae Christiansen placed second with a throw of 34-8 1/2 and Ozog took third with a throw of 33-8 1/2.

“They did really well,” Wood said. “It was a great meet. They had a great time.”
Meanwhile, Shorecrest finished seventh with 70 points. The 3A District 1 meet got underway May 17 and continues today, May 19 at Shoreline Stadium. Field event finals start at 5 p.m. and track finals begin at 6 p.m.
