Shorewood senior Bryan Michaels and his teammates swam fast and broke school records at the 4A state swimming and diving championships.
But the Thunderbirds still couldn’t knock off Wesco South rival Kamiak.
With the state title riding on the outcome of the 400-yard freestyle relay, the Knights from Mukilteo took first and claimed its first boys swim title over the Thunderbirds who finished third in the race. Shorewood took home the second-place trophy, the best finish in school history.
“I’m a little disappointed, I thought we could do better but realistically, Kamiak was so good there we probably wouldn’t been able to win the meet anyway,” said Michaels, who won 200-yard freestyle and 500 freestyle titles earlier. “So I’m happy with the time, everybody had a great split, including myself so I’m definitely pleased with that.
We’ve never gotten second at a state meet before. It’s the best team we’ve ever had. It was a good season.”
