SHORELINE

Shorewood turnovers led to four Cascade touchdowns and turned out to be too much to overcome for the Thunderbirds against Cascade.

Three quick Cascade touchdowns, including two offensive turnovers, turned a close game into a 28-0 rout at the half.

Running back Lorne Bridgford rushed for four touchdowns in the Bruins’ 35-0 win over the Thunderbirds Oct. 5 at Shoreline Stadium.

Cascade recorded its third shutout of the year. Linebacker Nick Morrison had two interceptions.

Shorewood quarterback Jon-O Hendricks completed 10-of-17 passes for 74 yards but threw three interceptions.

“On a personal level I just need to calm down,” Hendricks said. “I need to step it up personally. I need to make better decisions. It will come.”

Shorewood only generated 40 net yards rushing, 39 from Nathan Cook and 114 yards of total offense.

Bridgford scored on a 14-yard run less than two minutes into the game after Derek Sepe recovered a fumble on the opening kickoff on the Shorewood 20.

Shorewood prevented Cascade from getting a first down on its next two possessions. But Bridgford capped an eight-play, 64-yard drive with a 3-yard touchdown run with 6:36 left in the half.

On Shorewood’s next drive, Morrison, an inside linebacker, picked off Hendricks and rumbled 41 yards for a score with 4:41 remaining in the half.

Hendricks completed a pass to Tyler Host on the subsequent drive but he fumbled and cornerback Paul Heer recovered at the Shorewood 40. Bridgford took the handoff on the next play, hit the hole and was gone. He added a 10-yard touchdown run in the third quarter that came two plays after an interception by Julian Willis.

“I don’t want to take anything away from Cascade, they’re a great team, they played great football, but I think the biggest problem is that we made crucial mistakes at crucial times. It’s been our bugaboo this year,” Shorewood coach Andrew Hershey said. “We seemed like we were very tense and weren’t relaxed and having fun and that’s when we made our mistakes.”

Bridgford finished with 132 yards on 14 carries to lead Cascade, which piled up 233 yards on 37 carries.

“We got a really good line,” said Bridgford of the Bruins front five, which includes three players 240 pounds or bigger. “I just go off their blocks.”

Shorewood’s defense only allowed one sustained touchdown drive but giving Cascade a short field to work with after turnovers killed the T-birds.

“They played good in the first half,” Bridgford said. “They were stopping us.”
