A state investigation of a cluster of group homes in Lake Forest Park serving autistic children is painful for all those involved.
Regardless of conclusions and consequences, state officials must keep in mind the fragile nature of the children and families involved.
The care strategies for these children are carefully crafted balancing acts, easily knocked off kilter and not able to weather even momentary disruptions.
While there is no challenge to the fact that this care is difficult to provide and rare to find, it is also true that such care must meet stringent standards and that review and corrections are sometimes necessary. State officials must make sure that an acceptable alternative exists if changes are required.
