Shorecrest senior guard Ashley Hagood is one of the Scots’ most aggressive players despite standing only 5 feet, 6 inches tall.
A key part of the rotation since she was a sophomore, Hagood leads the team in scoring at 12.2 points per game and is deadly from 3-point range. She buried four treys and scored 22 points in an upset win over Jackson Jan. 30, a team that is ranked 10th in the latest Associated Press state 4A girls poll.
You had not beaten Jackson in five years but you came out on fire in that game.
We had a lot of intensity and we just came out ready to play. It worked to our advantage.
What do you attribute your scoring more points to this year?
There’s a few of us who have played together since we were in seventh grade. (There’s) a lot of team chemistry within the team. It’s my last year; I’ll go out as big as I can.
Did you grow up in Shoreline/Lake Forest Park your whole life?
I went to Ridgecrest but moved to Lake Forest Park and went to Kellogg (Middle School).
I live up in Horizon View. It’s deep Lake Forest Park, it’s right by Mountlake Terrace.
At 5-6, you’re not real big; you’re up against some bigger players. What’s your strategy on defense? You did a good job on Jackson’s Chanel Sam last week.
We play pretty good help-side defense if we are playing well. We don’t act like we’re small we play kind of big. Bigger people don’t really intimidate us as much as you think.
You’re also known for your 3-point shooting. Do you work a lot on that in practice?
Whenever I’m shooting around I shoot a lot of outside shots. I guess it just happens.
Do you like the 3-pointer?
Yeah, that’s like my favorite.
What’s in your iPod or CD player?
I like music with a good beat. I like some techno; I listen to some hip-hop and stuff. I listen to stuff that has a good beat that I can dance around to.
What’s something about you that people wouldn’t necessarily know?
I eat a lot. I eat the most on the team.
What’s your favorite food?
My mom’s spaghetti is really good. That’s my favorite with garlic bread.
