Several announcements regarding the Mill Creek Sports Park came forth in the last week.

On Monday, Jan. 26 the city of Mill Creek’s parks department announced that the facility’s skateboard park is open to the public. The park is open daily until 10 p.m. The facility is available to skateboards and in-line skates. Bicycles are not allowed for safety reasons. The Mill Creek Teen Advisory Board is planning a grand opening ceremony for later in spring.

A grand opening ceremony for the entire park, meanwhile, has been set. On Friday, Jan. 23, the city also announced that the park will have an official dedication ceremony at 9 a.m. Saturday, March 6. The date coincides with the opening day of Mill Creek Little League’s season, with the first game at the park set for 10 a.m. Because of limited parking at the facility, city staff is seeking alternate parking locations for the event, according to city clerk Kelly Hennessey.

The grand opening will also be the unveiling of the park’s new scoreboard. Mill Creek Little League had been raising money to fund a new scoreboard, which was not included in the city’s budget for the park. The scoreboard should be installed sometime in February, according to league president Dave Charleson.

According to Holli Redington, Mill Creek Little League’s fundraising director, most of the cost was covered by three donations.

Mill Creek Rotary donated $15,000. Residents Elliot and Linda Ashford committed $10,000 and Kent Chaplin gave $1,000.

“That was really nice,” Charleson said.

The league had been selling engraved brick pavers as a way to help finance a scoreboard purchase, but Redington said money from the pavers has been shifted to other things the league will need for the park. Among those needs are buying a refrigerator and grill for the concession stand, a public address system, a portable pitcher’s mound, and an outfield fence.

So far, the league has sold 83 brick pavers, raising $8,175, Redington said. The pavers should be installed by opening day, weather permitting.

Pavers are being sold on an ongoing basis as a league fund raiser. Call Tom Davis at 425-481-4904 or Redington at 425-337-7210.

“There’s no specific limit on how many we can sell,” Redington said.

The park is located at 13903 North Creek Drive, at the corner of Bothell-Everett Highway. The park opened Jan. 5 and is already being used by Silver Lake Soccer Association for practices.
