Skip Lunch, Feed Western Washington

President-Elect Barack Obama is calling on Americans to join a day of service on Monday, Jan. 19, to help end hunger in our country. The effort is part of “Renewing America Together” campaign, a partnership with Feeding America, a national network of food banks. Food Lifeline, Washington’s local member of Feeding America and the state’s largest hunger relief organization, is inviting the community to “Skip Lunch, Feed Western Washington” from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Food Lifeline’s Volunteer Action Center, 1702 NE 150th St. in Shoreline.

All are welcome, including children over age 6. Lunch will be served.

The Food Lifeline welcomes the local community to come in during lunch and work to end hunger. Projects will be available for individuals to repack food to send directly to hungry families and individuals in local communities around Western Washington.

Volunteers will be working in a warehouse, so you need to physically be able to stand on a concrete floor, and must wear sturdy, closed-toed shoes.

For anyone who wants to participate in “Skip Lunch,” but cannot volunteer on the day, visit www.foodlifeline.org to select a different volunteer opportunity, or “Skip Lunch” by donating the cost of your lunch meal to Food Lifeline.

For every one dollar donation, Food Lifeline can provide five meals to those in need.

First 2009 meeting for Echo Lake neighbors

The Echo Lake Neighborhood Association will hold its first meeting of the year on Tuesday, Jan. 20, at 7 p.m. in the Ballinger Room of the Shoreline Center with a review of the previous year and a round table discussion to help plan the next year. Volunteers will be recognized, officers and board members will be elected, and committee chairs will review their projects.

All who live or work in the Echo Lake neighborhood are invited to come share their ideas.

Hearing scheduled for Burke-Gilman Trail

The consolidated public hearing before the Hearing Examiner for the Burke-Gilman Trail Redevelopment Project has been rescheduled for Jan. 21, at 6 p.m. The date has been changed to give more time for public notice and comment responses.

As before, the applicant’s presentation will begin at 6 p.m. and the public comment portion of the hearing will begin at 7 p.m. If the hearing cannot be concluded, it will be reconvened at 6 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 26.

The Hearing Examiner has imposed time limits on testimony at this hearing. Each speaker will be limited to not more than three minutes. Lengthy testimony may be submitted in written form. Written comments may be submitted to the Hearing Examiner for review and must be received by 3 p.m, Tuesday, Jan. 20, or submitted during the public hearing.

YMCA free Family Day

The Dale Turner Branch of the YMCA, in cooperation with the City of Shoreline, is offering a free family day on Sunday, January 18 from noon until 5 pm.

Thanks to a partnership between the YMCA and the City, Shoreline residents have the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of this beautiful new facility at no charge.

The YMCA invites residents to swim in the pool, shoot hoops in the gym, check out a class, or experience the latest in cardio and fitness equipment. Shoreline residents must present a valid ID to gain access into the facility.

State Independent Living Council sponsors contest

Washington high school students with a disability have the opportunity to showcase their creativity and win a $250 Visa Gift Card in the “SILC Logo Contest.”

The Washington State Independent Living Council (SILC) is sponsoring the contest in recognition of National Disability Employment Awareness Month, which was in October.

Students ages 13-20 who have a disability and attend high school or are home schooled in our state are eligible to enter. Logo design submissions will be accepted until 5 p.m. on Jan. 16. The winning design will become the new logo for the Washington State Independent Living Council and featured on all official announcements and letterhead.

The Independent Living Council advocates for independent living services and issues that impact people who have a disability. Every state is required to have an independent living council as part of the 1986 amendments to the Federal Rehabilitation Act.

Located in the Department of Social and Health Services’ Division of Vocational Rehabilitation offices in Lacey, the council monitors, reviews, and evaluates the state Plan for Independent Living and works closely with the Centers for Independent Living and other partners.

Members of the Independent Living Council will judge entries.

Calling all skiers to Stevens Pass

Want to go skiing mid-week? Don’t want to drive? How about putting on those chains?

Again this year, the Patty Wagon ski bus will head to Stevens Pass for eight weeks of Thursday skiing beginning Jan. 8 and ending Feb. 26. The price is $191 for the eight weeks or $29 for a single week. Bus starts from 185th and Aurora Avenue, to Lake Forest Park, on to Bothell and last stop in Monroe.

Coffee and snacks are served on trip up and also trip down.

Those who do ski touring or snowshoeing can ride the Patty Wagon and then transfer to a shuttle bus that services the Nordic Center, further down the highway to the east. Same offer applies. For full information and a brochure, call Patty Price at 206-546-6717.

Volunteer at Hopelink

Hopelink’s Adult Education and other programs are constantly looking for volunteers to give hope to people in need in Shoreline. Hopelink’s Shoreline center at 15809 Westminster Way N. currently needs volunteers to:

• Help adults learn basic reading, writing or math skills or earn a General Education Development (GED) diploma;

• Drive to deliver food to home-bound clients;

• Sort gifts, stock gifts and help as “personal shoppers” for clients in the Shoreline Hopelink’s gift room during the holidays when they come to select gifts for their children or grandchildren (days and hours vary).

Training for all volunteer positions is provided. Volunteers must be comfortable communicating in English.
