An undermanned Snohomish County defense battled all game, but in the end the Vikings couldn’t overcome Willamette Valley.
The Raiders withstood a furious fourth quarter rally to defeat Snohomish 34-21 in a Northwest Football League game July 26 at Cleveland High School in Portland, Ore.
While the Snohomish County offense was largely intact for Saturday’s game, the defense only had two of 11 starters on the field due to injuries, work-related conflicts and other issues.
“We had a make-shift defense. Our guys did as well as could be expected,” said Snohomish County coach Wes Fischer. “Quite a few guys had to play both ways. It makes a difference. I wish we could have had a full team. We’re so talented. … You’ve have to play with who you have and do the best job you can.”
Even with many of their key players missing, the Vikings stayed close to the Raiders for most of the game.
The Vikings host the Renton Ravens at 6 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 2 at Edmonds Stadium.
Renton (1-6) defeated the Washington Cavaliers 18-0 last weekend for its first victory of the season. The Vikings rallied for a 28-24 victory earlier in the season.

Running backs Gray and Matt Terwilliger each rushed for more than 100 yards. Fischer noted that Terwilliger also played on defense and special teams.
“He does so much with his body,” Fischer said of the 5-foot-7 Mountlake Terrace graduate.

“I fully expect to get seven or eight guys back,” Fischer said. “If we can get some of our defensive players back and we have the same intensity we had (against Willamette Valley) we had a good chance to win.
“We’ve been through so much adversity this season. We’re going to go out and see what happens.”
