This summer, some schools will get upgrades and improvements as part of a roughly $149 million bond approved by voters in February 2006.

They include:

• Replacing portable classrooms used for band, orchestra and extended day learning with new pre-fabricated buildings at eight elementary schools — Briarcrest, Brookside, Echo Lake, Highland Terrace, Lake Forest Park, Parkwood, Ridgecrest and Syre. The buildings have restrooms.

• New synthetic turf fields and all-weather tracks at Kellogg and Einstein Middle Schools.

• Playground equipment – additional playground structures will be installed in July at Briarcrest and Ridgecrest.

• Playground drainage improvements at Echo Lake and Syre.

• Gym/Cafeteria Floors: New surfaces will be installed at Ridgecrest, Lake Forest Park and Syre, upgrading carpeted floors.

• Roofing: New roofs will be installed on a portion of Shorecrest and Shorewood until the buildings are renovated or replaced. Kellogg will also receive a roofing upgrade.

• Fire alarm upgrades at Highland Terrace and Parkwood.
